I heard that the new Giant Anthem 2009 has a new rear suspension similar to the current Trance. Does anybody know why its changed? Frame is also about 200g lighter and they may not make it in carbon anymore apparently.

I see the carbon one isnt with the new geometry... The only reason they changed it is to give it more travel but that defeats the purpose if you ask me

I doubt it will be 200grams lighter the frame that is

Heard that Giant do not make Carbon MTB 's anymore.  According to them the weight advantage is not so advantageous regarding weight to stiffness afforded by Alu frames

I think changing the shock setup to the Trance brings the center of gravity down to more over the BB. There is more then travel differances between the two models. Tube angles are the main thing that determines for what type of riding a frame is meant for.

The new Anthem X will only be alu for 2009. They will still manufacture the carbon Anthem advanced as their top end XC dual-suss. They will also still be making carbon hardtails.

The Antem X will aparently be lighter, but I doubt that it will retain the stiffness. Apparently the reason for the Trance type design is to accomodate a longer travel shock and to reduce weight.

The Anthem design is actually quite poor. The load from the rear shock unit is taken directly to the mid span of the down tube where bending is maximum. This are needs to be reinforced and that adds weight. By adopting the Trance suspension layout they can unload the downtube thus make it lighter. Lighter with more travel is the marketers goal otherwise they would have nothing to talk about and that is bad for business.

Anthem Advanced is still carbon and uses the std Anthem layout because the weigh penalty is not so big for the added strength required.

Thankfully Giant have got the rest of the basics right ie stiff, geometry..
