Imports and warranties

I believe the local importers such as cool heat are likely to tell you to get lost if you want to warranty something that you imported yourself.  Which may be the reason why they always insist on proof of puchase when something is sent in for warranty issues.

Next thing' date=' nothing ticks off bike shops more than someone who imports a bike they sell then bring the bike and ask the lbs to assemble it for them.  If you are going to buy online I hope you can install these things yourself.  Remember its not yout lbs that sets the prices, its the distributer.

But all in all IMHO prices here do need to become a bit more competitive.
[/quote'] They shouldn't be ticked off ........rather charge an equitable price and do some business they otherwise may not have had???

Were you able to read what I said in my next line?

Providing good back up and expertise in servicing of your bike is something they provide when you buy your bike from them, will your online store do the same?

Yup read your entire post quite clearly and by what you suggest is that one should never take a bike to a particular bike shop unless it was purchased exclusively from them??

What I said was if you have them install a part or build up a bike that wasn't sold by them there seem to be hard feelings.  So yes get your online store to build up your bike by all means!  It is far cheaper after all.

Just remember all things are linked, when cycle shops close down so do their clubs along with newbies to the sport.

[/quote'] Point taken! However the reciprocal holds true as well mate.......when cycle shops (certain ones that is) stop shafting us and running cartels and in turn rather earn an honest and fair keep more of us will ignore the online stores and return in droves fighting off all the newbies to get service?

I have been looking at buying gear from chainreaction and Jensons' date=' out of costing point of view it makes sense.

Does anyone know what the fineprint says when importing lets say XTR components and it gives hassles? Is coolheat still liable to uphold the international warranty?

The company that imports Apple had a similar run in when they refused to honour the companies International warranty, the warranty only stated the product had to be bought from a registered dealer, no mention was made that repairs or warranties can only be done in the country of purchase, and they are forced to serviced any Apple product regardless where it was bought if it's still under warranty.

Another thing, why are we the only country in the world where you can't buy cycling hardware and bicycles for that matter on a website?

Probike warranties any of the brands we represent no matter where it was bought in the world.

Has he contacted Jan Begemann? We would resolve the issue for him. I am not going to debate the frame model he would recieve as an assessment needs to be done by our product managers. Bottom line he would not be left with a problem if he contacted Probike.

Well, I crashed and broke an STI about a year ago, took it to the local shop and asked em to fix it, they called me back a few days later and said Coolheat wouldnt sell a single STI - I had to buy the set of two.!!

So I got online and bought a single STI.

Dinosaur thinking, in my opinion, I was quite happy to buy it locally, but they drove me away.

Now, I buy nothing locally, crikey, last time I even bought 30 tubes in with my order, were they cheaper? I dont know, I never bothered to work it out, actually I dont care, if they dont want my business and money, thats fine, there are others who do.!

I like the attitude of Mr Els and his company, nicely in line with the rest of the world.

Coolheat replaced a brake lever for me. No questions asked. Looked at the thing, determined it was faulty and gave me a receipt to collect one at their collections desk. I took it there out of choice as I was in the area. My LBS offered to do it for me but it would have taken a few days. I had not bought the part from them.

Coolheat and some other manufacturers/distributors seem to get slated very quickly. I just wonder how much of this is justified?

As im the distributor for Spinner shocks in SA i replaced a fualty shock on a Mongoose bought in the UK. No questions asked. Token has the same attitude. A customer bought a crankset more than 2years ago from a local LBS and had a problem with it bout 4 weeks ago. The distributor for Token from way back then just said they(Token) wouldt replace it. I sent 1 email with a couple of photos and a brand new crankset is on its way no questions asked. I will also have the same attitude with the frames that im selling.Wink

In the past I have had a difficult time with warranties through CoolHeat. I approached Shimano Europe and they sorted the matters out for me. Shimano kit can have up to a 3 yr international warranty if the goods purchased are from an authorised Shimano dealer. You can buy online from Jenson USA, they are authorised. CRC is not an authorised dealer. CRC Sells OEM Spec Shimano kit which carries a 1yr warranty and that warranty is with CRC, not Shimano. So if you purchase the goods from CRC, CoolHeat is within their rights to refuse warranty.

My Shimano kit was purchased via one of Madison UK's dealers so I had a valid warranty claim but Coolheat had been stung by people nmany times so they are naturally weary.

Shimano Dura Ace and XTR = 3 year Warranty from authorised dealer.

Shimano Deore XT and Ultegra (SL) = 2 yrs Warranty from authorised dealer

Shimano kit below the XT Ultegra level has a 1 yr warranty from authorised dealer.

Cannondale also has an international warranty in place and Cape Cycle Systems have been excellent the one time I needed to warranty a Fox rear shock for a Scalpel I had purchased while living in The Netherlands
