I interviewed Vladimir Kotov this week for Best Life magazine. He's 50 and finished 8th at the Comrades Marathon this year. He won Comrades three times - 2000 (set a new up-run record), 2002 and 2004. His last win was at age 46!

He's 12 years older than me which gives me hope! Big%20smile

Never mind the local guy - Arthur Duncan, I think - who took up mountain biking at 60, and was 72 or 73 during Sani2c, Dusi Mfula etc this year.  It was inspiring to see him finishing Sani2c on day 2.

The one good thing about aging is that endurance ability generally increases.

That's nothing I still remember seeing Wally Hayward puking at the finish... he was like 80 or something.... No that was awesome... to party and drink like that the night before Comrades is one thing, but at that ageClap

Kotov is local. Well, he's been a SA citizen for 5 years and has lived here for nearly 8 years.

I love stories like the one you mentioned, Cranky. Sadly, many of these older people have huge regrets about not starting cycling when they were younger. But on the plus side, they've started at some point!

That reminds me of my father in law. He and his mates had an allnighter and got to his flat with enough time to change into his running gear. Aparently they all finished but they all puked all the way. LegendDead

Amazing! Now I'm even more full of hope! What age do you think I should stop expecting a call-up to the Proteas? I was a useful opening batsman for the school first team in Stds 9 and 10...

LOL Not quite, but it's not a school known for producing great sportsmen that's for sure... Ended up marrying the scorer though! That led to children and responsibilities and premature ageing. Or at least the perception of it!
