1ste Cape Epic attempt 2009

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

We had a discussion a couple of weeks back regarding my first attempt, where after I got hit by a bacterical phnemonia, hospitalised two weeks, ext.....

My specialist ordered that I should stay off my bike for 2 months.  Resume training mid November.  With December being a difficult month for us to train, are there fair chances for me to succeed?

ps:  Thanks for the training schedules you guys mailed.  It looks hectic!

Hi Chappie

As far as I can remember we started training in November on the 16 week Polar training schedule.  December is disruptive but just persevere and don't loose any sleep if you miss a ride. We finished top 200 so I was very happy with our training.

I'll take your entry off your hands for free, if you ask nicely. WinkTongue

Chappie.... hang in there.  I believe that a healthy confident mindset will help on those really challenging parts of the course each day,  but I am sure you will survive.

We are also attempting our first, and I am also not loosing sleep over worrying what if!!!!  just know I am going to get to the finish, bar any unforseen accident or mishap.  maybe we will meet up at the back of the groupEmbarrassed

I think you can make it - it all depends on what you want to get out of the Epic. Obviously, you can't expect to give Mr Sauser a go on 3 months training, but you certainly can have a good ride. Expect to have longs days in the saddle, but if you are prepared for this mentally, I don't think you should have a problem. Make sure you practice eating and drinking on the bike - the race snakes don't have to worry about this - they are finished before lunch, but the average rider spends all day out there, and we have to eat.

Go to the Epic with you and your partner expecting the same outcomes, and be realistic, and you will have a great time.

Great, that is comforting.  I think the atmosphere at the back might also be partyfull, however, I know, I will hurt in someway, but will overcome it by sencefull riding.

Looking forward to see you there.

Hey Chappie, in the meanwhile, try and do some conditioning weight training. This can be very light weights and in fact if you go to a Biokineticists, they will give you a program that may not even require weights.

This will definitely help you with conditioning and strenghtening of your ligaments and the muscles that support them. A huge percentage of riders suffer from tendonitis but with the correct weight training this can be avoided big time. Ask me I paid for it. I'm not sure how ill you are but weights may be okay and if so, you won't regret this at all and with 3 months LLLOOONNNGGGG rides you will be fine.

Dis my eerste een ook! Nogal opgewonde. Weet nog nie of ek moet gaan vir 'n carbon hardtail of dual suspension nie. As mens vir 5 tot 6 ure per dag op die pad gaan wees, gaan 'n d/s seker 'n beter opsie wees? Enige voorstelle?

In my humble opinion and also that of Sean Badenhorst, ex-editor of Bicycling Mag, a Yeti is the best DS you can buy. Contact Morningside Cycles in JHB and they will be able to help you. You should get one for under R35,000 but if you can stretch your budget if you need to it will still be worth it.

I've been riding MTB's for 20 years and its by far the best bike I've ever ridden. You will really be happy about the money you've spent at the end of each stage.

What should we look at? I'm thinking in the region of R25 000 to R35 000.

I am looking to sell my Maverick for something around there WinkWink

(so I can buy another one)

Die nuwe merida dual suspension, kom in teen so R34,999, is carbon, DT Swiss wiele en Suspension, lock out front and back, lighter than some of the hardtails
