I think i am about to buy one.

Upgrading from GT avalanche 2

What are your views?

Quite new to the sport, know as much as the Avalanche 2 was a nice rig, but badly specced terribly.

Is this the same spec as the one you're interested in? Bikes are sometimes specced slightly differently in SA.

No Sir.

The Spec i am looking at is as follows

Fork: Rock Shock Tora

Rear Derailleur: Shimano SLX

Front Der: Deore (Have an XT and will put that on)

Shifters: Deore Rapid Fire

All rest is the same IIRC.

Current GT has LX Rear, XT Front, Suntour XCR Shock joke, Alivio shifters.

The derailleurs are fairly similarly specced. The front one is better on your current bike and the rear is better on the one you want to get. The shifters are better than your current one.

Does your current bike have disc brakes or V-brakes and what make and model are they?

Depending on why you want to buy a new bike, it might be worth rather just getting a new fork. You will have to weigh up how much you can get for your current bike as opposed to what you will pay for the new one etc.

There are plenty of 2nd hand forks for sale every now and again on the Hub.

PS: It's M'am and not Sir. Wink

Okay,

Here is the story...

I know on some pieces its only a slight spec upgrade. Since its a decent Frame, componenets will be done over time, If that makes sense.

The main reason i am not keeping the GT (frame geo i love) it seems a bit small, LBS different store to one i bought bike from tends to agree. Have managed to bust 2x Ritchey Comp posts due to long extension,(never over max)

Oh yeah, the GT has Tektra H Disks. I am happy with what i will fetch on a trade in. Just bout 60% of purchase price.

Ah, now that changes things. Having the right size frame is vital.

Read these post and you might find some useful info:

I see you're a newbie, welcome! If you want an opinion then you might need to "bump" your post during the week as it is sometimes quiet here over weekends (or the guys are too busy in the "price fixing" topic Wink).

Approve Hope to see a follow-up pic of your new baby and a ride report posted next week.

It's a very sweet looking ride. Enjoy the test-ride.

Bought the Alias yesterday, for better or worse

Took it out on the trail today. Noticed its a lot larger than the GT ( one size up). Overall think i have a decent bike to play with here.

My views:

Pros- substantial frame for its money with reasonably specced parts (will upgrade as they wear out)

I like the stance with which i ride it.

Cons- HEAVY, Insanely heavy, nice for downhills though.
