I cannot, for some reason, seem to get my gears to change nice and smoothly on the rear cassette. I have a Chorus RD, chorus chain and an ultegra 10 sp cassette. I have setup countless bikes before with no issues but am tearing my hair out trying to get this setup to work.

I first installed the RD and checked its travel, adjusted the limit screws accordingly and have left them well alone after establishing the correct amount of travel. After insalling the cassette i have managed to get the chain to sit nice and smooth in the center 4 sprockets. If i shift up to a bigger sprocket, the chain clicks and wants to go one sprocket up. Any more shifts and it jumps a sprocket. If I shift down from the center the chain clicks and wants to move down a sprocket. This is driving me nuts as as the chain doesn't consistanly want to go up or down a sprocket. Its happy in the middle 4 sprockets and plays these funny tricks on either side.

Please help, I'm running out of hair!!!!!!!

Veloce, thank you for taking the time to lucidly describe the problem. We get so many requests for help where the question is more complicated than the solution.

In my experience you are describing a problem where

a: the cable anchor is wrong or

b: the cable is faulty.

I'm going to assume that you've taken the cable out and looked to see there are no broken strands anywhere.

Now make sure the cable anchor on the RD is in the right place. Some RDs want the cable to come in under the anchor bolt and others to the upper side of it. Look for the telltale groove in the RD and its anchor bolt and see if you haven't got the cable anchored on the wrong side.

This small change in cable angle creates havoc with the upper and lower sprockets whilst the centre ones change beautifully.

I hope this is the problem.

Thanks Johan, I have checked for the groove in the cable anchor and with the Chorus RD, this is on the bottom most part of the anchor bolt (Mine was correctly positioned). After a bit of tinkering this morning the problem has evolved slightly.

My 10 speed shifters have turned into 9 speed shifters Cry. The chain shifts beautifully into the innermost 8 sprockets, however when shifting from the 8th to the 9th sprocket, it jumps the 9th and engages into the smallest (10th) sprocket. My shifters should have one more click to go but, alas, she is all clicked out.

If i totally loosen the cable anchor on the RD, and apply a bit of tension by pulling on the cable, i can get all 9 clicks back. The minute i try set up the indexing, this problem reappears.

Nearly out of hair...

I have just had the same problem with my XT dual control shifter. After a month or so of lubing cabes replacing cables, setting, resetting it turned out that the ratchet was damaged and that the upshift worked fine but the downshift did not.

Lever replaced and now we are 100% Well, we were 95% until JB got it 100%

Mine skips the 9th sprocket on both the upshift and downshift.

It might be a different design where it clicks up and down on the same ratchet but I am pretty sure your ratchet is damaged. If you look inside which I dont suggest you do as you will struggle to replace plastic bits and things you would see how tiny and sensitive those mechanisms are.

Take it to your bikeshop who will send it to Coolheat for you. Alternatively give them a call and they will help. PM for the number if you want.
