If you could have one set of wheels to train and race on what would they be?

Mavic Ksyrium SL?

Easton EA90 SL/SLX?

Fulcrum Racing 1's?

American Classic CR420's?

Custome Build - Specify?

I'm 83 kg so any adice for people that weigh more than the average elite would be useful too...

easton for sure...I have a set of the easton circuits....weigh 87 kg's and have not had a minute of problems.  Very happy with the wheels...brilliant build quality and backup is also very good. just the best in my opinion

what I have heard about the mavics is that once the nipples start giving hassles it is hard to really get the wheels back to the original condition and performance.  I only mention this as I spoke to a guy at our lbs the other day and he was having all his days with the mavics.  just my 2c

Considering the overall price of wheels I meant. You can buy a 1500 set of wheels and you can buy a R15000 or more pair. I thought this was in that median.

Mampara: Fair enough! but they are expensive to everyone!! and if I could afford "high end" wheels I would ask "what 3 pairs of wheels should I have in my armoury!!" lol

PS this is my top of the range too! that is why I can only have one set!

Mavic wheels are great, but the day they start with hassles, is often the beginning of their end...

American Classics were at one stage, infamous for their durability. Not sure about them now.

The Fulcrums look great and come from Campy heritage (for whatever that is worth). Haven't heard any bad stories from them. Don't know why they aren't more popular.

Eastons seem to be getting good press lately, so keep them high up on your list...

What about Reynolds wheels? Maybe more common overseas. Haven't seen too many in shops here.

Custom builds will be very durable if built well, but they do lack the bling factor. Start with DT 240 hubs. I have no idea what rims to suggest apart from Mavic Open Pro's.

If you want to go in that price range the Easton EA90 SL, EC90 Aero and Campagnolo Bora Ultra come highly reccommended from some of our riders. I quite fancy the Mavic R-SYS but I have no track record on them.

nice thing with custome builds is that you can choice the number of spokes, the wheel depth ext.  Also you can save on the flash and spend where you think it is important.

Being over 70kg, you may want to check spoke tension, spoke lacing and spoke strength (JB to confirm), and put on slightly stronger rims.

Hubs are  a world of their own.  Campy hubs (centuar up) are great.  You get some very light hubs (American classic) ext. as well.

A conosseirre (sic) will single out a unique set of built wheels as true bling.

(As JB about brass nipples)

How about this as a follow up question...

Weight limits:

How accurate are manufacture reccomended weight limits. i.e if it says 90kg on the box...what is a "safe" weight with no problems?
