how do I take of the paint from aluminium frame??

if it is just aluminium without any carbon you can use paint stripper available from any hardware store. just make sure you wash the frame decently after stripping the paint as any stripper left on the frame will react with the new paint.

I've seen JB soak a carbon rod in acetone... and no damage.... why can't you use paint stripper on it?

Is the sand too abrasive for the aluminium ?

I would love to pretend that I know but I dont.Embarrassed There was a thread a while back that discussed powder coating and anodising and someone had a good reason.

I took my frame to a guy in Boksburg who powder coats bicycles and motor cycles and he didnt sand blast but just used a chemical solution. Even he suggested a respray instead of powder coat.

Yes especially in the hands of the type of oke that usually handles the blasting gun.

There is sand and then there is sand. At the bad end of the spectrum is foundry slag, a visciously-abrasive mixture of pig iron, sand and rust flakes. This stuff will blast a hole through a concrete wall given enough time.

Then the stuff gets progressively smaller and nicer, right down to glass beads which will cost you more than the frame is worth.

Aluminium tubing on bicycles is so thin that you don't want to risk a sandblaster. If I could do the job myself with grit that I've chosen, I would. Unfortunately you take it to someone and they give it to Pietman at the back.

Glass beads, by the way, iare sometimes used to shot-peen aluminium tubing. It creates a bit of extra surface tension which act as a strong skin over the softer aluminium, masking some of the problems that emanate from the frame manufacturer using inappropriate metals on the frame just to differentiate the alloy. Nothing sounds better than Scandium or Unobtanium alloy.

They can blast and remove with some sort of bead aswell. I've got an ad for Abrasive Blasting and Coatings and they remove paint from wood.

I've heard some companies use crushed wallnut shells aswell.

JB' date=' what then do you then suggest for "eliminating" the powdercoating on a frame ?

Sorry, I can't help you. I'm out of my depth here. Plascon sells most of our powdercoating powder in SA. Phone their technical hotline and ask.

Thug, phone Cycle Art. They had to clean my frame before they repainted it.

Just checked out that thread (https://www.bikehub.co.za/forum_posts.asp?TID=29557&KW=powder+coating&PN=5) and JB & GoLefty both are against the Annodising of a frame due to the possible damage to the structural integrity.

Can't find any mention about sand / bead blasting a frame.

Was your frame powdercoated/annodised/painted before you took it to the oke in Boksburg ?

Maybe the wrong thread but JB has prett much summarised it.

My frame is currently powder coated and I was looking at redoing it. Given up on that idea though. I now just ride.Big%20smile
