New Rudy Project glasses

Ok...

So.... I don't know where to begin. Pardon me for being the voice of reason.

These are regular clear lens glasses right? And from what I read' date=' they cost R2300? Do they do anything other than keep bugs and wind out of your eyes? Or is it all about looking good (which doesn't make you faster by the way)?

Let me introduce you to what I ride with in the mornings. It's called, wait for it, safety glasses, can be had at any Makro or just about any hardware store for around R50.

Oh, and it also weighs 24 grams...

Im glad im not your eyes. You need something a little more than safety glasses to protect your eyes.  Dusk and dawn are still quite harmful times for your eyes. Even your "old beat up Oakleys" have probably seen better days and quite frankly aren't suitable enough for the harsh South African Sun

Guys....people are gonna buy what the gonna buy....and yes, a lot of the stuff is very pricey....that is why some people ride Sora equipped steel frames and others are already riding 11 speed Super-record nano-tech carbon bikes.

I think these glasses are very cool, with great lenses..., and that is what this thread is about.

are you a glasses salesman? How on earth did humanity survive the harsh dusk and dawn sunrays until now? In fact... is anyone here an optometrist? lets get the facts from them...

To get back to the topic, I agree. Think they look cool. Have a pair of Rudy's, I think its called the sports mask and I love them. Have the racing red lenses and use them for early morning rides as well.Light and very comfortable.

What was the saying again "if you feel your skull is worth R50, then buy a R50 helmet" ... suppose the same goes for your eyes ...

There is a reason why certain glasses are more expensive ...

ok, sight and everything to protect sight is VERY close to my heart (considering i've had cornea transplants in both eyes). safety glasses will keep dust etc out your eye, yes. BUT they will not protect from UV which DOES damage your retinas. lower quality lenses will also cause the light passing through to be dispersed before it gets to your cornea (the front clear part of your eyeball). then this light gets split up more as it passes thorugh your eyeball before reaching your retina. now for someone with perfect 20/20 vision this is not a problem - they will hardly notice it. for someone with "warped" eyeballs (eg post-cornea graft, astigmatism, corneal erosion from contact lenses, etc - ie the majority of peeps) this will be a touch more noticeable and WILL affect vision.

scratches on the surface of the glasses will aggravate this. these scratches can be small - eg from insects/branches hitting you, to big - eg the stones thrown up by passing vehicles.

then again some of us need to fit optical inserts into whatever riding glasses we use.

when i'm sanding the fairings on my bike, doing DIY stuff around the house or anything like that where i'm not going to need to see 100% perfectly then i'll use el-cheapo safety glasses.

when i'm out onth e road - driving, riding or cycling i will ONLY use my optometrist specs (and NO i do not go to the supermarket-style places). and my optometrist approved of my purchase of the Rudy's - she approved very few for me to go look at - visual accuity of the lenses was paramount in choice.

use it don't use it - i know a bit about optometry and opthalmology due to been-there-done-that

I didn't know that sunglasses are made for diferent countries to suit their specifc degree of UV light from the sun. I thought all sunglasses (from the same manufacturer) came off the same line and were just distributed around the globeShocked

Uh no. If you have a look at my profile you will see that in fact I am a student. One of my subjects entails sports vision and the use of eyewear for protection. But its all good, you can screw up your eyes if you want

No, he cycles starkers to make it easier for people entering his facebook competition to recognize him when taking photographs.

then why even bother with sunglasses... why not just walk around with a welding mask on...

the point azonic is implying is that its absolutely ridiculous to spend 3k on a pair of "super lazer atomic polarized invincible magic sunglasses", when clear plastic from your local builders depot works just as well.
