So what happens to the stolen bikes...are there any ways to reduce theft through tracking 2nd hand sales etc?

I will be the first in line to put a tracking chip in my bike! smiley3.gif

I think most of us can outride a pedestrian attacker.

Jules, that's true for full-flight pursuit, but that's not their modus operandi. The slightest hill, obstacle or clumps of grass slows a rider down to speeds easily attained by a sprinter. Their primary weapons are their choice of battleground and surprise.

About a year ago I got attacked by two guys while I was cycling. They both crabbed a bar-end. I hit the one in the neck and he let go. Managed to get my pocket knife out of my pocket and stabbed the other through his hand and into my other hand! When he let go I cycled to the Shell garage and offered 4 of the guys a hundred rand each to help me find the guys. We did find them and held them till the cops got there (25 minutes!) Went for a tetnus shot and an AIDS test. All clear.

Sad but true. The first guy got attacked by the wooden bridge. You can't exactly dodge someone when you're on a narrow bridge.

I just try to go as fast as possible through there, and I keep the pepper spray on my backpack strap. The thinking is that if they do jump me, I can hopefully do a bit of damage with the bike, and travel a bit while crashing so I have time to get the pepper spray. It's terrible that you need to plan your hijacking strategy in advance Unhappy

I'm not trick-or-treatin' at your house this halloween.

I am impressed. How long did the scuffle last? They weren't armed? How did you manage to get your knife out and open it with one hand? Have you practiced this often?

Also, how did they approach you? Were you on tar or offroad and what was the terrain like? Did they carefully choose the ambush spot?

Kick ass and take names Calabash.

This is a contrarian view, but if we all just roll over and give them what they want, it means they will keep on attacking us and trying to take our things. It may cost me dearly, but if some motherf*cker tries to steal what I worked so hard for, he isn't getting it without a fight (so long as a 'piece' isn't involved....you know the whole story of knives to gunfights, etc, usually ends ugly...)

Suffle was pretty quick. They were not armed but were pretty high on what turned out to be Norpi. I have a Spiderco that is designed to be opened with one hand. And yes, I do practice opening and closing it more often than I should. I was riding on the gravel shoulder of the road between two of the street lights. I was aware of the guys but did not think that they would get to me as quickly as they did. Had also had a few beers and was on my way home!

Got mugged very badly in Jamaica a few years back and since then I always carry a pocket knife.

Nice story. I think your paying those guys R100 each to catch your attackers was a stroke of genius. I hope you have a scar to show your grandchildren one day.

I have a friend in the police reservists that would love to get hold of the thugs. PM me if you would like to deal with this. I am miles from Jhb and wont be able to organise it myself.

Which wooden bridge?

The one in Bryanston, at the start of the trail, at Devonshire road (I think), right after the 12th Ave bridge.

Okay, so the attacks seem to have all happened at the very north of the trail. I just called Inspector Van Heerden at Randburg Police Station and he is going to take action. He heads up the MTB Patrol unit and I explained that the attackers appear to be targeting solo riders late afternoon/early evening and most likely weekdays.

He says that is in the Sandton precinct and he will discuss a joint operation with the Sandton police. He said he'll check with them regarding any reports of the attacks to get more details. He said any info can be emailed to him on info at randburgpolice co za (you know where the punctuation goes). The more details he has the better he can plan.
