Thug has got all the pics.  I'm sure he'll put them up later.

It was my first proper mtb ride and I had a few spectacular wipeouts (with lots of bruises to prove it!).  Thanks to the rain last night there was enough mud to build my own mine dump when we finally made it back to the cars!

We lost Hog when his rear derailleur broke and the chain modification we made left him with a chain that was too short and no gears.  He got a lift with two guys who drove past and still hadn't made it back to the cars when I left!!

Thanks to everyone who was there - it was fantastic to meet you all and I had a great time.

It was a fun ride until, like MsB said, my d?railleur decided to implode. I caught a lift with 2 guys in a Pajero to a place called 'The Rock' - a nice little MX track. There's not too much shade there, so found a spot where I could see the MX action but also keep an eye on the entrance to see if PB pulls in. Only problem was that I was looking for the Vito, and PB was there with the Polo. So I missed them. I did get a lift with some MXers a while later, so it's not too bad. I quite enjoyed watching the MX.

Thanks everyone for the fun ride, and thanks PB and mtbking (I think) for manning the search party.

We felt a bit k*k, as we looked at The Rock and then came back to the car and you weren't there either!

I had a great time, but had an automatic gearbox for the last 3 or 4 k's. The bike kept changing gears, and at the worst times as well.

that was the second or third search party. i went back on the return leg to find the splinter group after i found amateur, but missed you guys somehow. eventually piernas phoned, and got hold of me, so we went back again. by that time, you were already gone. sorry, dude.

zoo, you looked mighty peeved when you left. what's up?

otherwise, it was a good one! mark, glad to make your acquaintance, as i am to my namesake on the santa cruz smiley2.gif shaunh, mark gave your apologies. hope you're rested, mate smiley4.gif as thuggie pointed out, it is awesome singlespeed territory. the alice b toeclips bike loved it smiley16.gif although she did seem to amplify my lack of bike-handling skills smiley9.gif holy roller2008-10-26 07:57:28

ok, so finally got the dirt, grime, slime, sludge and mud off me and the bike.

had a cool time today. there were some huge puddles, but it was the muddy dirt road after about 5 kays that caused problems. i couldn't keep my bike up cos i was hanging onto brake hoops. riding in the drops is only good for short stints of singletrack and drop offs to get to the brakes, but my wrist got sore when i rode like that. some of the bumpy stuff was sketchy.

highlight of the day, i thought, was the dune we trekked (read: pushed) up. i thought getting down was fun, but a little scary in the soft stuff. msbehavn entertained us with a faceplant, and somehow blamed me! pocketbikes entertained us with an (interntional) endo which went way too far!

the loop out to murray park was nice, and we bumped over the stones of the old railroad. we lost zoo and tnt1 at this time, and were going to start speculating about why they disaapeared together smiley2.gif but thought better of it when we saw zoo at the cars later smiley3.gif

the loop back took us through a "tyre river crossing" (the pics will tell that story). stole thuggie's peace for a tiny little spin. awesome bike smiley32.gif and grips smiley32.gif

we lost piernas, sign girl, clive and hog at this point. i found amateur early into my search mission, but somehow didn't find you guys. the rest were waiting patiently about 3kays up the road. we thought that maybe you'd taking the road to catch us - sign girl's ridden out there before, i thought. we rode a little further. crossed another tar road and stopped, that's when piernas phoned. (on this note, i reckon we should all carry phones if we do this ride again). four of us came back and found you and i paced everyone back (actually i got bust sucking thug's wheel, and them mtbking81 took advantage by holding onto my camelbak smiley7.gif

pb made many calls to hog in the last coupla kays, but no go. i tried to phone nino's cos we were gonna be late for our booking.no go again!

so sorry to those who didn't enjoy it. was gonna say sorry for the wet stuff, the gloopy stuff, the smelly stuff, but i won't smiley17.gif think it made the ride smiley4.gif

Well I had a look at the damage and it's not too bad. The derailleur may still work, although it needs new cage plates. Will also need a new dropout and a new chain - mine was fairly close to gone anyway. Guess the honeymoon with the 'Goose is now officially over. Not too bad, seeing as I've had her for

over a year and a half, and I've put her through hell all the way! LOL

On the cellphone topic - I'll be buying a new battery and a sim card for my old phone. I decided not to take my phone today because I forgot to take a zip-lock bag. I would've felt a lot worse having my (rather expensive) phone destroyed due to water damage, than be stuck at the MX track for an hour.

Overall, still a cool ride. The mud made it very challenging today, and we also had fun with the routes - and watching HR trying to turn his bike into a boat! Dude, you don't know what's in the water! LOL
