I am toying with the idea of building up a pair of american classic 350 rims(28 hole) to american classic 350 hubs(28 hole).

I was thinking of getting Sapim aero spokes or DT aerolite spokes.

Which one is better? And where could i find them.

Are they worth the effort or would one get a similar weight with DT revolution spokes.

Any idea as  what size spokes i would need for font and rear hubs?

Good news is that those hubs have been slotted.

The DT. spokes work a teat and are available from your local bike shop who can order them for you from Coolheat.

Get the pro lock nipples as well.

As for the lenghts you need, check out the DT. spoke length calculator on their site.

So i can use the aerolite spokes? what do you think of aerolite vs rev spokes in terms weight?

I tried their spoke calculator, i must admit i could not get it to work will try again.

The Revelation is a little heavier( but it's miniscule) , they would be my preference to be honest. A good old double butted spoke.

One less tool to use when building and truing Big%20smile

Feizal, are you simply re-building the Sprint 350s with new spokes?

Some issues to consider.

When building with 28 spokes with Revolutions, you have a very big problem in getting the spokes to proper tension since they want to wind up long  before they're at optimum tension. There is no way of holding them to prevent turning. Any tool such as a plier would simply score them and initiate stress cracks in the spoke itself.

American classic hubs make it every more difficult for Revolution spokes in that the rear hub's flangesare very close together, requiring more tension to get the same bracing as a wider-flanged hub. This makes the Revolution problem even worse.

A bladed spoke would be easier to work with under those circumstances.

In order to determine spoke length, the wheelbuilder needs to know:

1) Spoke hole diameter.

2) Spoke circle diameter.

3) Distance from centre of flange to centre of hub.

4) Spoke bed offset.

5) Number of spokes.

6) Number of crossings.

7) Effective rim diameter (ERD)

This gets plugged into the formula for calculating the length of a line in space.

Spoke calculators use the same formula but get the data above from a database. If the database doesn't have the components you're working with, it is useless.

A good wheelbuilder can measure the above things for you and calculate the length of the spokes.

You must seriously be doing something wrong when you get the Revolutions to wind up for the correct tension.

The spoke calculator allows for the measurements that you would normally give to a good wheel builder.

hi Johan

they will have to be built up from scratch. Who in Cape town can do this.

Sorry, but i love AMC wheels. I have a pair 420 i have been riding for more than 4 years with no probs.

No need to apologise for your preferences. I merely pointed out the practical issues facing whoever does that job.

If you want someone to calculate the spoke lengths for you, you have to give them the data or access to the components so that they can measure it up.

When you've decided you're serious about doing this job and have the cash ready, drop me a line and I'll put you in touch with a good wheelbuilder in Cape Town. He'll be able to measure, calculate, source and build the wheel for you.
