L'Bie Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 I have a friend in the Western Cape looking to buy a new entry level MTB. He has had offers on a Trek4300 @ R3600 and a Silverback Alphine @ R4000. What is reasonable and is there something better available?

JPW# Posted October 23, 2008 Posted October 23, 2008 I would go second hand, if spending that kinda money, usually the bikes under 5k are only used as commuters, but if you really want to go new, Silverback is the best "cheap" option I think.
parabola Posted October 23, 2008 Posted October 23, 2008 The Silverback alpine is an extremely nice bike for the price, well built and the Suntour XCM fork is much better than most other entry-level forks. Comes with a semi-decent wheelset and great tyres. V-brakes work well, and the drivetrain is a mix of shimano and SRAM components. Its quite a heavy bike but its sturdily built. I am refering to the 08 model (which was R2999 a while back) but I bet you could get one for a good price if you look around now that the 09 models are out.

calabash Posted October 23, 2008 Posted October 23, 2008 If you can find a 07 Silverback Alpine, buy it. Great bikes. I rent out ten of them and have had very few problems.
