I'm going into the final phase of having my wheels pimped.

I was chatting to a friend and he mentioned spraying the "decals" on with an airbrush instead of using vinyl lettering.

The only hassle is that if the artist/spraypainter f*cksup then I'm going to be in the sh!t as it wont be easy to redo.

Paint would be more hard-wearing as it won't come off as easy as vinyl when cleaning/riding through water/sunlight etc.

My wheels are carbon. Will paint solvent affect the carbon in any way?

Does anyone have a (constructive) opinion on this?

Uhm... No.

I thought you were on about deodorants.    Wink

Maybe this might get the ball rolling wrt to your actual question.

Good luck...

Depends on how long you want the same old decall.

Paint lasts forever, but can also fade from sun, water, abuse..

Vinyl - if you stick a 7 to 12 year vinyl it will really stick. Same vinyl thay use on the cars and that sticks like hell... wind, rain, shine, dirt...ect....

And it is easier to change if you'd like a new decall.....

Painting it on the rims is not such a big job. The first thing is that you should not work on the carbon directly. Just roughen up the clear surface and work on that. If you can, use water soluble paints for the artwork. They paint cars with this kind of stuff these days so it is durable. And if you make a mistake, you can easly wipe it off with meth spirits. Jsut give a nice clear coat afterwards.

With airbrushing the options are much wider for mixing coulours/fading-in and patterns whereas vinyl is one colour.

No it's not. You can have anything digitally printed on vinyl these days. It will cost you though.

JB told me that carbon is imune to paint and solvent. Paint is also lighter but with decals you can get a better design / result as you can have more colours and detail.

Yes it is. Get yourself a beer and search for "Acetone" right here on The Hub. I suggest Speed Devil goes with the other (good) advice here, he doesn't seem to like or understand technical debate.

JB I read all your comments on acetone and carbon in your previous threads.

I just wanted to check if the opinions have changedWink

By the way, I do like and understand a technical debate. I just don't get involved if i know nothing about the topic.

I think vinyl would be the easiest and most practical....how many wheels do you buy that have there names airbrushed on.  would look nice though in all honesty.

You can order the poefter Lightweights with custom paint jobs.

You can always take your wheels to this lady and she can do them up really special..

See, this is where we lock horns and you guys read me wrong - on the difference between fact and opinion.

Fact is easy to prove or disprove. It's a matter of scientific knowledge, or mathematical reasoning or something that can be verified by a witness. Opinion is as elusive as an eel in a bucket of Stan's.

When I state a fact or disprove a long-held myth with fact and a plausible explanation, I do so without emotion. Usually the side that believed the contrary then get all emotive about their poor hypothesis that was smashed and retort with telling me that they are also entitled to an opinion on the matter. Well, they're not, because it is not a debate of opinions but facts.

Example:

Fact: 1+2=3

Opinion: Red bicycles are the prettiest.

There cannot be another opinion on the result of the equaton above.

Therefore the correct answer in your reply would have been to check if new solvents have been found that dissolve carbon, and not whether there are new opinions on the matter.

I am not the custodian of fact, nor are you. It is just there. I make no apologies for factual-based debate in the tech forum.

Yoh dude.  Relax in your slacks. It was a joke...didn't you see the winky emoticon?

I was not challenging any of your statements you have made or how you came to your conclusions or your emotion state when posting your facts.

At the end of the day I just want know what the most practical and economical route would be and what the pros and cons would be for either method.
