TXS cyclist Posted October 30, 2008 Share Heres my view. 1)Cut the freebies' date=' people only use it because its free, and go back to what they were using initially and paid for, next time they need a gel.Unless you are a multinational and can reach millions of people in one swoop, DONT give your product away. 2)Cut the size of your sachet and its relevant price (or market two sizes) - most users of an energy gel are just recreational athletes, for them price is key, they are not interested in the specifics, if they see one gel for R7.00 and another for R12.00 - they will generally pick up the 7 buck item, few of them will read the label. 3)Unfortunately in SA we still have the "imported is better" mentality, a local product has to be priced right, even if its better it wont be competitive until its percieved as "value for money".! 4)Availability is key, as someone mentioned Wasp is not that easily available - increase distribution. 5)I am also not sure of the advantage of sponsoring a pro athlete, generally it can be looked at a a walking advert but personally if you ask me who sponsors which pro athlete, I couldnt say, and I will bet 80% of people wouldnt remember either. I have tried getting into sportsmans warehouse and they said no..that they had enough stuff for now. Dischem sells out quicker than we can replace, and i work on keeping their stocks up personally every 2nd day, not the easiest to do. I am brining out a vanilla custard flavour now with pepto pro, the first proper protein gel in the world, with years of research around pepto pro. I would send you an email address to send a email to and if your name is on the list you can buy one get one free at 94.7, up to 10 gels, so 20 gels for R120 ? That way i can also see if that kind of thing worked ? If you pre-ordered your box of 10 you got it at a reduced price of R12 each. But if you wait longer and buy at the expo you can get double that for the same amount.
