Energy gels: GU, Whasp, USN

I thought Whasp worked very well and had no problems (it shouldn't be too different to any other gel). My friend (a novice cyclist) tried it and had GIT upset and blamed the honey! I think the list of ingredients scares people off. If you look at Crazy Kiwi (on your Wikipedia entry!) you see terms like Ciwujia, GABA, propolis. I think the average person just wants to see fructose, maltodextrin and caffeine.

Oh, and a friend says Whasp is too sloppy. Make a mistake while mountain biking and it spills. He prefers the thicker GU.

My wife bought me two just before this years Argus' date='  sorry cannot remember which one. Popped one (with water) about 30 minutes before me group started and almost instantly got a sort of jumpy nervous twitchy feeling that lasted until about the end of the Blue Route. I think the second one is still lying in the cubby of my car because I havent had the courage to take it yet. Since then only ever used GU Espresso Love.

I dont think it was the Gel. At a Race like the Argus it will be nerves trust me I know

HI

All fair comments, i want to point a few things out, i made is easier to take as GU and others are too think.

Vooma sells for R8 a gel but if you look at the carbs per serving i think its around 9g as the values they put on are per 100g, we have 25g per serving and sell for R11.99 at Dischem. so actually getting 3 x the cars for R4 more.

Thats also the price point, we only R11.99 in dischem and everybody else is more expensive than us and will be going up a lot more, GU is soon going to be R 18.

The green gel which has the worst taste is because of the ingredients and is our best selling gel as it kicks you into hyper drive, its got 100mg caffeine, which is double that of a redbull and 4 times of the expresso love GU, its a real piece of work that gel.

We dont have HONEY, we have Propolis and it cant give you a upset tummy, impossible, so he might of reacted to something else or taken it wrong or been dehydrated or something, he should try it a few times and if he had the same result 5 times i could look at it.

We also a 50g sachets where GU is 32g so you getting a lot more gel for less money meaning you can take it at longer intervals, plus we have more glycerine which means you need less water as its already a bit mixed so you dont need 450ml of water with every GU

Im Not knocking GU, i think its a good product, im just striving to make mine better. Think of this.

3hr race, you take GU every 30min as per sachet with 450ml at R14 a gel.

YOu need 6 gels which is R84 and you need 2700ml of water, you only carry 1500ml

3hr race on whasp, take every 45min with 300ml water at R12 a sachet

You need 4 gels which is R48 and only 1200ml water , leaving you 300ml over

When you start to look at it like this, maybe it starts to make sense.

Thanks for your feedback so far, its interesting to see the misconceptions in the market place

My name is Collin Allin and i started and own Whasp energy gel.

I have put in over R2mil into the brand' date=' i sponsor over 100 athletes, i sponsor training camps, school events, golf days, races.

We advertise in Magazines, we have been at every big cycling expo for over 2 years incl comrades this year.

We advertisie on blogs, websites and forums like this one

We are a bigger gel with more ingredients in for the same price as other gels.

So my question is what do i have to do to increase my sales ? let me know you use other gels or why you don't use mine.

I am launching a pepto pro protein energy gel next week, new flavour too, Vanilla Custard and i have nothing to compete against in the market as we are unique but does anybody care ?

Your time is appreciated.

Many Thanks

I sell your gels and havent had any complaints.

I suggest you put this peace of math on a marketing brochure change it a bit so it mentions no other brand in SA or All the other brands. In a country where people are only buying what is affordable and cutting out speciality products - cash is king and thats what you explain there.

As people have intimated, its a combination of marketing, word of mouth and perceived benefits for the price one pays.

All things being equal in a comparison against GU, Whasp as a combination of benefit and value for money is far superior.

If I did use Gels, Whasp would be the one.

I'd say from a market awareness point of view a major 'name' athlete or team sponsorship is probably the most expensive but also most effective way to get a product name ingrained in the minds of potential consumers who already use a similar product, also breaking into new markets / making people aware. The power of association is seriously strong stuff when establishing or building a bran

I know this is nothing you haven't already heard or thought of..... all that said, 2 years is not long when trying to break into a crowded and established market place. If the product is good, and you're already ticking all the promotional boxes, then it's a matter of time till market acceptance naturally sees an increase in sales

Great idea by ppwtf, talk to Malcolm Lange he is starting a new team next year. Also al cyclist in SA is affilliated with a club, get involved with the cycling clubs not by giving it away for free but do a better deal (bulk sales).

well, having tried gu, powerbar gels, GT gels, corn syryp, and a few others, the whasp gels have been a revelation. Racing with the green 'kiwi' has worked amazingly well. its bitter, not sweet, and has a caffeine kick when i need it most. I train with the crazy berry blue, no caffeine, and flavour is ok , sweetness tolerable.

so far they havent let me down yet (even brought me through the Hill2Hill this year which was a tough b@$tard! race)

I Havent needed to eat anything else during the races I have done, Whasp gels have been the business.

my advice to anyone who hasnt been stung, try them out, certianly worth it.

Not so sure about the carbs quote in Vooma - none of their numbers add up on the packaging. And my Vooma works out at R6.50ea when I buy in a box.

If you can get your product into my local Durbell pharmacy (Big Bay) then I'll try it out. How about combo tester packs that combine several flavours/products in one discounted package?niterider2008-10-29 21:34:45
