Hoping I could get some advice here.

I want to buy my Fiance a MTB, as she has

been throwing subtle hints every time I go out for a ride, that she

would like to join me etc.

I am very glad she is paying interest and wants to get involved Big%20smile, but my

worry is that I get her a new MTB and she has few rides and decides its

not for her...what do I do with the bike then? Confused

I really would like to start her off with new kit though... instead of 2nd hand.

See if your LBS has a test bike you could use over the weekend. Ride both days and take it from there.

I got myself a Silverback Nabraska - ended up being around R8000 with new shoes, Camelback and the bike.  I don't MTB much but I wanted a MTB so that I could do the odd ride and if I decided to get more into it that I had a bike that I could at least do a few races on without it falling apart.

Make sure you get a ladies specific saddle for her bike otherwise she won't want to ride often (or at all)  I also got one of the ladies Camelbaks which I found to be less bulky and uncomfortable.

So thats my 5c (USD not rond)

Thanks Alida! Will definitely make sure of the saddle.

jedimastersa, the suggestion of borrowing a bike first is the best idea. bicycles lose value from the second you pay for it at the shop. and the thing is if you start wtih an entry-level bike "just in case" then it (a) reduces the chance of her really loving it and (b) if she does love it anyway then she will want a nicer one much sooner.

so corrow a bike for a ride/weekend or two and take it form there

What size are you looking at

I actually would have no idea... how could I determine that without being to obvious? I want to surprise her, although I know I will probably have to go back to the shop for setup etc.

Try borrow a bike for the first couple of rides. The suggestion of a demo bike is a good one.

You might find that the first ride on a loan bike will put more emphasis on the experience of the ride rather than thinking whether the 6 grand you have just spent has been a waste of money or not.

If it works and she is keen she will be in a better position to make her own decisions on what she wants and will get more involved.

Been there done that. My wife spent years seconding until she decided to "try" it. Is now hooked.

My 2c worth.

If you do borrow a demo bike, either borrow a womens saddle or buy one (doesn't have to be an expensive one).  I think a lot of women are put off cycling because of the saddle being uncomfortable, us ladies like our comfort.
