Pop quiz time fellow Alberton hubbers:

There are two schools of thought on this issue. I need some opininions.

One school of though says "Train, don't strain."

The other "No pain, no gain."

I know enough to understand that there should be a balance, but what is it?

After Saturday's ride, my legs felt shattered and "hurt" most of yesterday with some residual discomfort today.

Is this normal?

(Yeah, I know I'm not normal. Just thought I would head you off on that one cause I can see the comment coming from someone.)smiley4.gif

Depends on what you are trying achieve Slave.

If your content in the bunches and just enjoy the social side then dont strain.

But...if you wanna run with the dogs, dont p!$$ with the puppies dude...you have to hurt yourself sometime!

Eina, seems to be this is the time to get out. Now, while I still can. (No, wait, I'm in too deep already (and no,I ain't braggin' either.)

Oh bugger. Pain is going to become a constant companion then I guess. (Oh crap, what have I got into????????)

Insanity and cycling seem to mutually exclusive. They definitely co-habit.

Well, insanity does require you performing the same act over and over again expecting a different result each time...sounds a lot like cycling to me!

In the words of the Zen masters at ASSOS, "Pain is temporary, Glory is forever"

Maybe the pain would be worthwhile if there was glory, but I kinda kicked this thing off too late in life.

Not serious though, I really dig cycling. It's cool with a buncha nuts like you guys. (Yip, you included Trubie, just because you have become a regular contributor to the thread and our rides.)

I seriously think if I hadn't met all you regulars that my bike would be collecting dust round about now.

So, I went for a 30 k ride yesterday afternoon. I hope it wasn't as a result of my resting or some need to believe, but going up Bellairs seemed to be a bit easier and climbing up the back end of Klipriver was a breeze.

Not too happy with the overall average but loads of traffic lights killed that one. Still managed a 29 though so not too bad at all. Maybe the shoes are working.

Eish angaaz Kid.

Like I said, maybe I need to believe, so yes, they do seem to work well. I will take a noceslow ride to the Glen later today as a recovery ride and prob'ly rest tomorrow. Thursday, if the weather holds, I will do my 20k time trial again and that should give me a better picture.

I'm still way too cynical and undecided about the shoes dude. I did climb Klip river at some mean speed but then I managed that on my last time trial.

Too soon to tell with not enough data.

AND, I managed to do that ego bruising fall that y'all warned me about.

I just could not unclip fast enough when I got home, so I bliksemmed over in the garage. Felt like a right poephol after that. So first time in ten years, I fell off the bike. Lucky I had stopped already. What a chopper.

Them shoes aren't made for walking hey!

Use them to yr advantage now, you have already seen the benefits - excluding the fall we all warned you aboutsmiley17.gifsmiley17.gifsmiley17.gif

That face mask came in handy this morn - see it was 6degr when I got home.

Slave , forget the ave, it means buggerall (read - very little)

Get the time in the saddle........, works same as savings acc.

More you have in there the better, the idea is not how fast you can spend it!

And its also a long term plan you follow, no get rich quick schemes

Dam theose shoes are def not made for walking. Most uncomfortable shoes for anything other than sitting in a saddle' date=' clipped into the pedals.

Not much pain, bush eish, do I feel reeeeeeely DOFF now.

I just have to get used to clipping in now so that I can pull away from a stop faster. So maybe these routes I do with all the traffic lights have some value as practice to clip and unclip.

Glad to hear that Nuwbie. You happy with the quality of the goods?

Thanks for the late warning. If I knew this 10, 15 years ago, I would have run away from that Pick n PAy "Fireball" that I bought from my neighbor.

Now, I'm a slave to my bike and a bluddy frikken forum junkie to boot.  Too late now, I guess we just make the best of the situation an organise some more rides.

Hard to forget the average Trubes. in the absence of a HRM, it is the only real measure of where my fitness levels are going. (What fitness?) I know it's about quality, but if I keep getting my average up, it means I'm doing my routes faster.

Slave you'll get used to it in quickly otherwise you'll fall over a lot smiley36.gifsmiley36.gifsmiley36.gif

Ok I've only fallen over once but I've fallen off a few more times than I'd like to. I think I'm going to invest in some training wheels for my bike.

School fee's Slave...thats what it comes down to! Although really arb fee's at that!

But, I think we have all fallen at least once after getting into the clipless scene. I still have days where I cant clip in quick enough...but (touch wood) always manage to unclip.

So Slave, I like  this idea of the winter garb you have for sale...what else have you got?

Kid' date=' I'm told that necessity is the mother of invention. So seeing that I am usually a bit slower than some when it comes to learning, I will have to learn this skill very fast, or pay the price.  I can see loads of practice and several falls.[img']https://assets.bikehub.co.za/legacy_images/smilies/smiley18.gif[/img]

I must have looked hillarious on Sunday while cruising the "hood." I had stopped at a traffic light and unclipped OK. When the light turned green, I was trying too hard to clip in and accelerate at the same time. My foot slipped shot off the pedals like I was trying to convert a penalty from my own 22 m line on a rugby field. (I missed the "loop" to clip into).

I can laugh about it now but Sunday, whole 'nother story. smiley36.gif

I battled to get going (accelerating from stationary) yesterday because I got frustrated trying to clip in and it's not all that easy imposible to do when nothing is lined up. Obviously, once on the way, cleated shoes aren't bad at all.

What do you have in mind? It's all Panda's Kit and they have a pretty coprehensive range of stuff.

Long sleeve shirts, arm and leg warmers, tights. All the usual stuff. Trubes got a mask / balaclava. (I put one on for five seconds to see how they fit and took it off again in a hurry. Sheesh. Scary stuff that.)

Ox got a pair of tights and he seems happy. (maybe that's cause he hasn't been for a ride yet to test his new gear.)

Spaso9 is getting a piar of tights, arm warmers and he wants some bib shorts as well. (not that bib shorts are for winter riding, as I found out  Saturday.)

It's good stuff dude. Kid got a pair of arm and leg armers, but not thermal stuff.
