@Agteros

Did go to the doc for my sinus problem. Finished first set of tablets and I'm now half way through my antibiotic course, unfortunately it doesn't seem to be getting better.

Hang in there, those tablets of DOOM (bug poison) take a while to work, and if it does not... Maybe not a bug, but an allergy? otherwise the doc prescribed the wrong bug poison, but somehow I doubt that. Finish the anti-biotics, and if you are still suffering, take some anti-histamines as suggested by MDW.

The other thing is to just get on the bike and ride... The increased breathing rate will help to expel the gunk out the system, just point it downwards . During my studies in the previous century, when I also cycled a bit, I used to go home from res during holidays, and NOT cycle for those few weeks. Cycling during the first week back at res was more of a spitting affair than anything else, but after that everything cleared up and I could step on the gas again. Just do some lowish intensity stuff at first.

Shew I am glad that ride is over, joined the 7am bunch for a 90km loop then did a second one on own 5hours and finished in this horrible cold rain storm but all I can say is I am going to truly enjoy the rest of today. bike was washed today, guess what - had to wash it again after the ride

enjoy the weekends riding - here's hoping it stays dry

Well it didnt stay dry - Druiwefees 106 done in wet weather, some rain on the way..... Good start to 2011, similar to the 2010 Wet One.

Happy with what I saw and felt today, looking forward to the year's racing.

Cramp attack at 78 k's but nly cause I didnt take my muti from the start - wet weather confused my pea sized brain it seems. Live and learn!! Still managed a 38 = ave. Not too miffed, good ride, good prep, safely reached the finish!

Apologies MDW, but I cannot get the 32GI thingy to work for me. Tried it again today and it was an utter failure for me. At 1H42 everything just fell apart :(

Well done Trubie! Was the first road race I did where I had mud water dripping of my face, and grit in my eyes behind the sunglasses!

No problem Ageteros, but u must know 1h42 is not energy drink related it sounds more like pre-race nutrition as for that time u can go flat out on water alone :-) tell me what u had pre ride and last nights meal. Not trying to convincemu to use 32Gi but I am sure I can help U get your nutrition down packed to make your energy levels far better on a ride. Was it road or mountain and wha effort were you putting out? All the best M

I can run for 1H40 about, and then I hit the wall as well. I need to take preventative measures during a 1/2 marathon not to bomb out. Last 1/2 was 1H49, and I used 2 SupaGOO (one at 10/11 km, one at 15/16km (not that I felt like I needed it THEN, but then not feeling like I needed it afterwards either), even managed to run a faster 2nd 10 than first. Long runs (over 15km) are always an issue - always get hungry/tired/hitting the wall, except if I sugar up.

Last night had a Spaghetti Bolognaise as usual. Drank 32gi not the usual coke. This morning I had my usual wholwheat Pronutro. Also had some pasta salad, an egg, 32gi drink on the way there. Used some 32gi chews during the event. Only saved the day(made it to the end) by taking 3 of the 4 SupaGOOs(emergency rations in case of an emergency) as per schedule below

Usually I eat ONLY Pronutro as breakfast, and then a bottle of energade and an Energy bar on the way to the event. Normally drink Energade, and a SupaGOO every 30 minutes during an event (starting with one before the start in the pens - Abt 15 mins before start). I then take the next one 30 minutes AFTER start.

For the '10 94.7 I used Game of all things in my water bottles, and consumed only 3 SupaGOOs during the event - kinda forgot about them, never felt like I needed anything, and felt GREAT - never tired, never near any walls, got a PB!

I second that! Great ride Trubie.

Agteros - Mud water? Did you follow the right route or take another route through the bush to get full of mud? Ordid you really do a Spruit ride?

Agteros, I used to eat pasta of some sort with bolognaise the night before. Since I cut out the bolognaise I have felt much better during the events the next day.

You should see my helmet... was clean after the spruit ride, but after todays roadie ride

Fixed it.

Oh, and thanks but no thanks. Ox says he swims like a brick. Just now he gets some daft notion to tie himself to my feet and then make me swim. Eish, you okes are very unkind to a doddery old fart.

I think I'm going to find a GF and give up cycling. At least the GF will be loving and kind .... (Speaking of which, there was one (or was that two or three) that thought they could dictate my cycling habits after one cup off coffee. Needless to say they are now having coffee with someone else.)

Even Liewe Exie didn't try that. Well, not more than once anyway. Don't know what makes 'em think they can control stuff they have no business controlling.

See some of you maybe tomorrow, maybe Sunday, maybe monday.

Slave, you doing it wrong! Get a GF that also rides bikes. Or just keep the one that you ride everyday and that also allows you to ride other GF's without complaining. ;)

And just get in the pool and swimor we will get the good doc to be your swim coach (didn't he play waterpolo or something?).

Ageteros all I can say is WOW, you eat all of that, ok, so there are a few concerns. I dont know your body composition ie: body fat, weight height etc. I still need more information but there are some things that have crossed my mind. Do you take in any sugar with the Pronutro or have it with milk only. Also what kind of pasta salad did you eat, ie: type of pasta. Secondly my concern is that you could suffer from hypoglycemia. When last have you had a proper fasting blood glucose test done?

Just some information about fatigue during and event: ie: hitting the wall

Hitting the wall comes from depleting your glycogen stores, our muscle glycogen can store anywhere up to 800 to 2000 calories worth and liver glycogen around 250-500, this leaves you with quite a bit of what I call readily available energy. So training day after day of course depletes glycogen and the most important thing is getting them topped up for the next workout. I had a guy a few wees ago contact me a stage MTB rider on stages 1,2,3 he was performing great on stage 4 he totally hit the wall and actually lost so much time he was out of a podium position and even out of the top 10. I analysed his nutrition over the 4 days, what was happening to him was he was not replenishing his glycogen sufficiently after each stage, so after stage 1 his stores were slightly depleted but on stage 2 he started with 1/2 of a full tank, stage 3 he had probably closer to a 1/4 of a tank and on stage 4 his tank depleted leaving him with absolutely nothing in the first 2 hours. This is key.

There is no ways anyone can burn off 3000 calories in 2 hours if their stores are totally full, and glycogen store levels are completely dependent on what we eat, before, during and immediately after an event. Its why I tell many athletes you can easily do a 2 hour session on water alone, if you have a full tank. I still advise eating a proper meal before and during and after so that your body replenishes itself sufficiently for the next workout.

The purpose of an energy drink is purely to spare glycogen. The best way to spare glycogen is to tap your fat stores, in other words low insulin spiking drink with riding within yourself. However with that said, 60% of the glucose is used to feed the muscles 40% the brain, so the bonk feeling is really that pendulum effect of brain shutting off when muscles cannot extract any more ATP from the glycogen stores and it leaves you feeling terrible. The only way out of this the only way is a glucose injection ie: a high GI product such as a gel.

I would definitely say that if you are not eating any sugar before your workouts, or taking in any caffeine based drinks such as coffee etc, THEN please go for a check up and ensure your blood glucose levels are 100%, because you possible might be a hypoglycemia sufferer and then a total re-look at your nutrition for training and racing would need to be looked at.

Personal opinion is it really sounds like that, but I dont have enough information to go on. If I have just 2 teaspoons of sugar in a cup of coffee before a ride, my system is so sensitive to the sugar spike it would reduce my time to fatigue assuming I am not taking in anything with me, by close to a 1/3 if not more.

Let me know, can always drop me a pm to discuss.

all the best

Mark
