So my race report:

Was with the front guys up Krugersdorp Hill and Robert Broom. Worked on the front down Sterkfontein Hill and along the N14 as well as on the road after the right turn. Did some time on the front again on the drag to Maropeng to thin the bunch a bit. Just near the top I got dropped and then chased down the group. Rejoined the bunch at Sterkfontein Caves and rode with them all around the Cradle, including closing down a break and doing an attack of my own just before the right turn into Malibongwe with a couple other riders. We were caught about halfway up the climb past Toadbury Hall. We got rain at various points but hard rain down to the Avianto onramp to N14. On that last corner with about 2km to go a rider or two went down on the wet road. I tried to avoid it but my wheels slipped out from under me and I went down hard. Roasties on my upper left leg and cut and scrape on my left shin. But got up immediately and rode to the finish. Time was 2:39.

Slave also has a thing for concrete drains.

Morl of the story then is to avoid concrete drains. They seem to come off better than we do. Six busted ribs and broken collar bone = NO FUN AT ALL. :( Not to mention just a little bit of pain and discomfort.

Trubes, glad you are ok mate. In future please watch out for closing booms. Hope you heal up good and proper. ;)

Thanks Slave. Race was safe enough. It was just the hard rain in the last 2-3km on an off camber right - left turn when the sprint is being set up which lends itself to the greater risk of crashes. The frigging finish area was dry!!!!!

If you only used decent tyres !!!

So you think I should go back to my Attack/Force tyres? ;)

No tyres would've gripped at the angle I wanted them to/need them to when I swerved to try avoid a crash ahead of me.

If I had Gators then I would not have even got up Krugersdorp Hill!

What tyres were you using?

In my limited experience, I have not found any bike tyres that are likely to hold the road in wet conditions. I imagine that just like car tyres, a bike tyre that is puncture resistant and lasts a long time (Gators) is likely to give poor wet weather grip while a softer compound tyre which will give better grip is likey to give up some ground on the other two aspects.

It is certainy like that with car and motor cycle tyres.

 :stupid: I can relate to that one .

'bout 6 months or so go, Bankmed sent some reps to the branches to do health / risk assesments on the staff. So I fiugured WTF? Let's do it. Pinprick cholesterol test, BP, Height and weight. That sort of thing. My BP is great, cholesterol is great, BMI is very good and I exercise (a lot). But given my age, I am still considered high risk for what you describe. It was scary. :w00t: (Borderine terrifying.)

Too true Oxman.

So what is on the agenda for the weekend. I had plans of doing a ride tomorrow and Sunday but woke up this morning with some serious bronchitis. Been off the bike for a week now and was looking forwrd to a bunch ride or two.

Will have to wait for the chest to clear before I venture anywhere near a bike.

Whatever you guys do, keep it safe.
