OK' date=' I'll 'fess up here... I got the MTB to kinda play along, so went for another ride around Northern Farm.

Did 49km yesterday, and 33km today. [img']https://assets.bikehub.co.za/legacy_images/smilies/smiley2.gif[/img] A cool 80km MTB for the weekend.

Rides were:

Yesterday(ad-hoc chain fixes): http://connect.garmin.com/activity/4313548

Today (ad-hoc derailleur fixes): http://connect.garmin.com/activity/4350432

Somewhere during todays ride I got the impression that I'm busy becoming slower, but a bit stronger on the hills... Maybe all the LSD roadie rides I did the past while is busy getting to me? Or is it just delusions of grandeur to want to go faster, coz I am eyeing a time of 2:50 (or less!) for my next 94.7? This equates to roughly 33km/h coz it is more like 91.5km. My first(last year) and only 94.7 was a 3:13 - done on 3 months of running intervals and < 500km of MTB rides

So... a few questions: For the faster bunch, what is the avg speed

1. On the 40km short loop?

2. And the longer loops?

Something more technical:

3. how attainable is a 33-35km/h avg on a compact crank?

The fastest combo I have is 50x12 and I can easily spin at candence of 100, avg 85 cadence on the longer road rides, and know how to share the workload between the legs(pushing larger gears) and the lungs(spinning) ...

Ox - just work little bit on that endurance, and you would be able to go sub 3. I did a 3:02 last year, but cramped badly from 65 onwards because I was underprepared. Hoping to do a 2:30 ish time this year.

Your sub 3 also depends a lot on where you start the race from. If you get  a start before say "W" you are bound to make it comfartably. If not, brace yrself for a 90 + k TT to get it done.

Come ride with us more and we'll certainly try give you some good workouts to get there.

Agteros...why do you ride a compact crank? I'm suddenly putting the puzzle pieces together and know where that killer acceleration comes from! Your 50blade! (Very track dude!)

You should be able to maintain quite easily on those gears if you join the quicker group. Come and give it a try...

GreyOwl' date=' yeah nothing is 'just there', there is always an explanation!

The only reason I have a compact crank bike, is that on 7 Nov last year I realised it will be suicide to do the 94.7 on a knobbly MTB. Slicks were somewhat ovepriced (in my opinion), so I got hold of a bike that kinda/should fit, did 15km at 10km/h (following my son, who just startin riding his bicycle on twee wheels) on it and then 94.7 [img']https://assets.bikehub.co.za/legacy_images/smilies/smiley4.gif[/img] Have to say I was quite glad for the medic tent at the end (after rear-ending an emergency vehicle just out of Randburg!).

Will be there in two weeks, and give it a  go then - hopefully Racman ain't gonna pull the bunch at a HECTIC pace! I just need to feel what a higher semi-stable pace feels like - even if it is in the middle of the bunch!

Time... time... time... The one thing I do not have! The best I can do is every second weekend! Yeah yeah I know - I'm not even a full-on weekend warrior!

My next (fitness) goal is a 10km race (run - no walking) beginning of July, and then full-on 94.7 mode. I'm toying with the idea of an IDT.... Any suggestions - I have the Elite In-Out in mind? Anything better - but not more expensive?

edit1: I did my 3:13 starting in YY smiley2.gif

edit2: That was after the 20km MTB race on the day before smiley9.gif

On another post today - I cannot search for it as my tab bar which says home, topics etc is nowhere to be found now, not sure why - about a IDT to swop for a Spin Bike, is a pic of the IDT I use, Its the Elite, and has worked well for me so far.

My suggestion is you try and get a seeding race in before the 94.7. It will not only give you a chance to judge yrself in a race, ie pace possible etc, but also make sure you get a better seeding this year.

It is imperative however to ride bunch rides at a pace close to what you plan on racing at. Eg we can do the Heidelberg route , with a big enough bunch at 32/33 ave,and you can get a good feel of what to expect.

Jip the guys look serious' date=' and some of them can ride serious also.

That Felt looks so cool too ride, I would pay just for an outing on that machine.

Must say the first time I saw the dude on a ride, was quite impressed with his bike. Him and I joke each time we see each other about the nice bike the other one rides.[img']https://assets.bikehub.co.za/legacy_images/smilies/smiley36.gif[/img]smiley36.gif

One bike I dont wanna ride is that bling bling Scott OB rides

One day we'll ride as far as this thread is long Mr Capri!

Yeah, that Felt is hot Nuwbie...I've heard rave reviews on that exact bike.

OB...well, thats another story. I dunno, I didnt find him anything other than friendly and laid back today. He's never changed...he's like SA cyclings answer to Vernon Koekemoer!!

He's also gonna look like Vernie if he comes of his bike, riding without his helmet.

He is and always will be a character in SA cycling. Love him or hate him, he's not gonna dissapear. Also been around forever.

I like him. He's not the first on NASA's speed dial list' date=' but he's a character. And he can ride, and he enjoys riding so its all good. [/quote']

That should be all its about anyway.
