I am looking to my wife a MTB. Looking at a budget of about R15k. Can you give me some advice please. She will not race any technical stuff but will probably do some long rides with me. Nothern Farms, Spruit and probably Groenkloof at a stretch.

So do I get her a hardtail or a full suspension bike? Which one in that price range?

there are a whack of bikes in that range. you're looking very cool hardtail, or mid- to low-range full-susser. if you go for the latter, look for something with a fairly stable platform - trance, anthem, i-drive. depending on her body, you can most probably steer clear of the wsd bikes, and adapt a "male" bike to fit.

Look at the Scott Contessa range... Very nice colours and graphics. After all. That is wha tis MOST NB for tha ladies...

I know... That is how I got mine to select a bike... Then you doctor it later as they just dont know the dif detween deore and XTR... LOL

Don't underestimate the value of the woman specific bikes. Especially if she is small in stature. My wife went from enjoying mountain biking to LOVING it since we got her a Trek WSD.

Trek is too expensive in the womens line. So is Spez

Dont know why the manufactures have to charge so much more for the womans bikes, and they still come out with lower spec and a rather small selection too. Scott is almost there if not already in both aspects.

I'm 1,72m tall, and I'm really comfy on my Merida Mission 500.  I've apparantly got quite long legs with a comparatively small torso - so I have a small frame.

I also looked a few ladies specific options - but they were all quite pricey.  I really liked the Giant, but that back shock did not lock out.  I'm not 100% sure how easy it will be to on-sell a female specific bike.

My 2c worth.

exactly my point. there is a general feeling that the wsd stuff are just a sales gimmick, which is not necessarily true.
