Maybe some one can get in touch with this guy, and if he is well enough he can join our demonstration on 30 Jan 09. And if they find the trucker that hit him we demostrate again.

here's a quote that didn't make it into the print or online edition:

Asked whether he would take to the roads again after his recovery, (Ryan) said: ?Maybe I?ll start with mountain biking, and worry about the road later.? Lara on the other hand, said she would have to find a new sport for her husband.

It's not easy for our loved ones to accept that we're into a sport that is fairly dangerous. My fianc?e is constantly reminding me to be careful, to stay off the roads, to not ride crazy stuff, wear padding...

That said, she's gotten the "So, funny story..." phone call when I dislocated my shoulder last time, so I guess she has reason to worry.

These stats may shed some light on these incidents.

It's amazing that each time a traffic spokesman talks about an accident involving cyclists they mention ten things cyclists must do and maybe one for motorists.  Shows you the general attitude of authorities  towards cyclists!  Then again' date=' how many cyclists actually do any of these things?

"Merle Lourens, traffic services spokesperson, said cyclists should ride single-file, stop at red lights, use hand signals and wear bright clothing.

Motorists should respect cyclists and make space for them."
[/quote']

WH - you are right, it does show a very poor attitude of the authorities and people in general.  You will no doubt have the majority of readers nodding their heads in agreement, despite the fact that failure to adhere to any of the behaviours mentioned have resulted in serious accidents to my knowledge.  I'm not disputing that all are good behaviours and should be practiced by motorists and cyclists (ie - ride/drive in single file except when overtaking; stop at red lights when necessary; always indicate intentions and drive a bright vehicle or wear bright clothes).  However, 99% of accidents on the roads between cyclists and motorists are caused by:

Left turning motorists turning across a cyclists path

Motorists overtaking when it is not safe to do so

Motorists driving in the emergency lane and

Motorists failing to yield at intersections, red lights and stop streets.

Unfortunately none of these can be impacted by cyclists, although I always make it very clear to motorists that put my life at risk what my thoughts are on the issue.
