oh and was good to meet Danger Dassie too.

Tried the GF 29er, was ok, set up was too stiff on the bike, tire pressure too hard too, but interesting. didnt notice any real advantage, and there was enough varied stuff on the track.

the new Commencal was really smooth, the meta 4 was amazing.

GO 2.0,

In terms of what a 29er is....

At the most basic level, a ?29er? refers to a mountain bike with a

larger rim than a ?traditional or regular? mountain bike. The ?29? is

actually a bit of a misnomer, as it refers to the approximate diameter

of the entire wheel (with a tire mounted), whereas a regular mtb is

approximately 26? in diameter. To be more specific about rim size, the

29er uses rims of the exact diameter of a ?regular? road bike rim also

referred to as ?700c".

Why a 29er?

For tall people, 29" can help bring things back into proportions, and

this way also take away the disadvantages they suffer riding a bike

with dispropotionately small wheels. With a properly designed 29" bike,

they will be more stable in the saddle, even in extremely steep climbs

and descends. The larger contact patch of the 29" tires helps them

generate the grip and traction to keep up with lighter riders a bi more

easily.

For short people, 29" offers the same pro's and con's. The con's of 26"

mean less of a problem to them, but are improved upon anyway, while the

con's of 29" (like weight), affect them a little more. People as short

as 1m53 (5') are enjoying their 29" bikes, though under 5'5", it does

take attention to detail in order to not produce toe-overlap (toe

rubbing front tire when steering).

And the benefit of that on a MTB is? (I'm asking this coz I genuinely am curious!)

Speak to Xenomorph. He's got a 29" hardtail and loves it.

Sorry - if it was too stiff - was probably still set up for my weight...

yes the idea behind the 29er is that the geometry is different. The GF was set up more aggressively than the Niner. Battled initially with the size around a twisty track, but liked the ability to sail oiver the roots

Thanks guys...makes a lot more sense now. Had visions of these ginormous wheels!!

Ok...so whats the bike of choice? Hard or soft tail? Is the Hard tail a more 'hard core' approach?

The chance to test ride a bike at such an arranged venue is a fantastic idea.

Ek was ook daar! Het die volgende gery:

Gary Fisher Super Caliber

Trek somethingorother

Trek EX met 5" suspension travel - voel of jy in 'n Rolls Royce rondsweef.

Volcan

Agreed about the course - makes a change to ride some single track at the farm - too often we just ride the same dirt roads. from now on I am going to "explore" the farm

Mark' date=' don't be a panzy and just buy that Epic man LOL[/quote']

Sorry to report that the Epic is fairly low on my wish list. Tops is the Gary Fisher that Wayne has been riding. Awsome bike. Best value dual sus would probably be a full XT equiped Goose Canaan Elite.

Rode a full carbon Merida 96, awesome, but far to race oriented for me.
