cluster or cassette?

Where the hell is JB when you need him? Confused

Sorry Nancy, I went for some coffee. Do you mind?

A cluster belongs to the old-style screw-on hubs. The cluster of sprockets and its disposable freehub body (kown as a freewheel) together are known as a cluster.

A cassette belongs to the more modern age and comprises only a series of sprockets and their spacers. This type of wheel is known as a freehub wheel as in the Shimano designation of FH-XModel number.

If you can find a cluster to fit on a SRAM freehub I'll eat my polystyrene helmet.
