What to put onto/into your pivot/suspension bushings/bearings ?

I have the new anthem x1 and i need to know how often to clean and service them, and then also if i need to put in grease, oil or keep them dry ?

I think the x1 comes with sealed bearings and not bushings so i imagine one needs to grease the pivots/bearings, but how often ?

Sealed bearings, as in the type with a "DD" or "RS" suffix are supplied "greased for life" Usually such bearings have a red or black rubber seal between the inner and outer rings of the bearing. They do not require any lubrication as long as the integrity of the seal is maintained.

By "sealed bearings" you guys of course mean cartridge bearings. These are, as you all say, greased in the factory and left like that until you pop them out and replace them.

If they start to get dry, you can get another halflife out of them by carefully pulling off the seal with a sharp knife and pumping some grease in there before replacing the seal.

Ball bearings are a very poor suspension pivot. They don't like partial movements and last longer when they can make full revolutions.

And, these little bearings are surprisingly expensive, especially when purchased by the dozen for suspension bikes.

There is a cure. It's called a hardtail.

Captain Dura, you can pop the seal of the bearing and put some grease inbetween the bearings. Then you take a compressor and blow the grease evenly inbetween the bearings. Put some more grease and put the seal back on. If the bearing soes not work properly, punch it out and go to Bearing Man. SKF and other makes has those bearings for cheap. And remember, next time you purchase a bike or frame, get extra sets of bearings from the  shop. (usualy at no extra charge). Good Luck

If I remember correctly, you need to remove the pivot rod (or what ever it is is called) first. My dad had a steel bar with a sharp point that were about 1 mm narrower then that rod. I could just know it out. After that the bearings could just be wiggled out.

The X1 has sealed cartridge bearings. I also have that bike. I have not replaced them, but if you take the shock off you will be able to move the suspension system and quickly see if there is some stiffness or damaged bearings. Even better is to completely dissasemble the rear assembly - should not be too much work and you can then turn each one by hand and see how it feels. They should be easy to find at bearing man
