It could be a few things, that you need to check methodicaly. I suggest that you go to the Parktool website, it has a good section on deraileur adjustment.

No it does not. The screws are only there to stop the chain frm falling off the smallest inside ring and the biggest outside ring. The adjustment barrel on the shifter will help there but you will never get it perfect. It will always rub in some gears.

The H & L screws limit the range of travel of the derailleur with the L screw lomiting travel inward toward the smaller chainring and the H screw limiting the outward travel (big ring). Your issue could well be this or perhaops actual derailleur alignment ....

oooh ok  thanks! will have a look on the two sites. i almost never use the middle gear so maby it is not such a big problem after all...but thanks!

what do you mean you don't use the middle gear? There are only two front gears on a MTB. That smallest ring on the inside is a chain catcher and should not be used to ride with.

huh??? i have a 21 speed 3 in front and 7 back...i dont understand....

YOu think you have 3 infront. The smallest one is not a gear to be used. It is there when incase the chain falls on the middle ring, it does not fall on the frame. So you actually only a "middle" ring and a big ring.

BTW, I'm just BSing you. Wink

I wld assume your FD is Shimano? If so' date=' download the leaflet that comes with the part. It explains exactly how to line it up and set the hi and lo screws. Basically, in a nutshell, the screws set the 'limit' of the FDs range. The screw stops to cage from shifting the chain too far, and off the blades. The actual distance that the derailer shifts is determined by the shifter on the handlebars. The problem you are talking about sounds to me like a combination of alignment [also explained in the Shimano leaflet'] and adjustment on the bars. Hope this helps.

so tell me then' date=' on my left handleba on the lever where i change gears why is there a 1, 2 and a 3 then?[/quote']

you should only use 2 and 3. 1 is there to catch the chain and to "rest" the chain when the bike is not in use. You know you should always leave you chain on the smalles back and smallest front when bike is not in use.

Why they number is like that, only they would know. Maybe it's the same reason why dancers only start counting from 5.

Hi Helloise,

As usual, this is a crap answer to your question, which was an honest one. I gather that Mampara wants to sound cool, like he doesn't use his granny gear, and has such strong legs that his granny gear is ornamental. It's a lame ego thing that is confusing to people who might actually want to know this stuff.

In answer to your question then: Assuming you have 9 cogs on the cassette on the rear wheel, and 3 blades [cogs] on the crank, you have a 9-speed groupset, and 27 gears to play with [3 x 9]. The numbering 1,2 & 3 on the gear changer is set out this way because your first gear, the easiest to push the bike with [used for super steep uphills] is when the front smallest blade, and the back biggest cog are engaged. 27th gear will be when the front biggest blade and the back smallest cog are in use. This you'd use for really fast downhills etc. The reason they are numbered that way is so that when you are on the trail you can quickly glance at the bars and know what blade you are on.

Hey, take the broom handle out of your ass and relax. If you've actually gone through the thread you would have seen that I've posted yesterday at round about 9am that I am taking BS. Even added a little winking emoticon.

And yes, I do not use my smallest ring because I hate pedalling like crazy and not get anywhere.
