Just heard today that I wont be able to run anymore. So time to dust of the old Mountain bike.

It is a Trek Y300 Superlight, it might be old but I bought it in 2000 and probably only rode 100km's on it. Did take it in for a service and everything is still in a good condition.

What do I need to do to upgrade the bike so that I dont make it too hard for myself? Will be riding just for the fun and to stay fit (Dont like the whole idea about riding on the road)

Here is a pic of the bike (I dont know much about bicycles so hope you guys can see something from the pics)

Warranted or not, that frame is going to get you a whole lot of strange looks. Just ignore them and ride. Upgrade things as you get into it and find the need. Rather spend cash on kit if you dont have. Shorts and a helmet. Good luck.

It's a pretty unique design that only existed for a brief period, so there aren't many of them around. But like DB says, ignore the funny looks cos it is a great ride.

As far as upgrading goes, if it works, ride it. If it breaks, upgrade. If you have cash to burn, start with the fork, it'll make the biggest difference to the ride. Then, see above.

Bet you many people will think it's a new exotic prototype. It actually looks quite cool. I agree with droo. It'll be an amazing ride if you upgrade the front fork.

How much rear travel has it got?

IIRC, it's about 3" rear travel. Anything more than that was reserved for DH bikes at that stage. So a 100mm fork would do it proud. And maybe an RP2 on the back...

I wouldn't spend money upgrading the components of that bike.

Just ride it and when you feel it doesn't fit the bill anymore upgrade the whole bike for something  more current.

It probably weighs a ton and that would be the main reason to upgrade.
