Toe clip - a cage that fits onto the front of the pedal that your toe fits into.

Clipless - pedals that you shoe can clip into and you dont need a toe clip.

Cleat - metal shpongle that attached to the underside of the shoe. Can either fit into a ridge on the pedal if using toe clips or click into a mechanism on the pedal if you are using clipless.

so i gather then that you will have a clipless pedal ex mtb shimano pm520. then you get the shimano mtb shoe with a cleat that will fit into the clipless pedal? can you remove these cleats then from your shoes?

yes. you can remove the cleats from the shoes. you also don't have to use the same brand pedal/shoe combination.

they can be removed, but unlike a road shoe, mtb cleats are recessed into the sole.

Toeclips. Found on cheaper bikes. They use to be metal and is still used on the track

Road clipless pedals or commonly known as Look pedals.

MTB clipless pedals. These ones are made by Crank Brothers but Shimano are the leaders with their commonly known SPD pedals.

Road cleats. Each system uses it own type, so make sure before you buy.

MTB cleats. These are SPD (for Shimano pedals) cleats. Again each system uses their own. The Shimano ones are also compatible with all the bikes in spinn studios.

Nope. Look/time/whatever, all called clipless incorrectly. They in fact clip your shoe to the pedal via a cleat.

Platform pedals are in fact the only true clipless pedals.
