What Shifters for XTR R/D

Yes you CAN use any Shimano shifter with that derailleur!

However some will say that they are better with dual controls (found that myself). They work fine with triggers but remember that the shift direction will be 'back to front' to what you normally expect!

Depends what you call 'normal', with a rapid rise when you push the lever 'down' it will shift 'down' to a harder gear ............ and when you click 'up' it will shift to an easier gear .......

Ai ai ai I am confusing myself but hope it makes sense.

BTW have you used rapid rise before (on any shifter)?

Sorry to say but rapid rise will never be considered normal ........

Yes, used for the first time with normal LX shifters. Nearly killed myself. There is no way I can use the 2 lever option with this rapid rise R/D. The duel I think makes more sence here as you can reach the thing! So the XT Dual will work?

Yes it will and I found it much easier to adapt with the dual controls. Like you say going from 'normal' shifting' to rapid rise can lead to all sorts of interesting shifts when it matters ..........

Disclaimer ..... this is all IMHO and I take no resonsibility for anything at all that may arise from this advise!

My main problem is trying to shift to an easier gear while barreling down a rough downhill hard on the breaks for a switchback.. My thumb cant easily get to the front lever to push. (cause it is holding on for dear life on the bars). I can't use the index finger to pull the trigger either, due to it being used to try stop!

  • 3 weeks later...

so what will be the best advise for someone with Sti levers , to stay with the normal derailer or use rapid rise?

Bees, Stay with the combination that works for you. I have changed back to a norm derailer for now until I can change to XT duel levers. Not sure on how the normal derailer will behave with duel levers.  Mixing the 2 def does not do it for me!

We are in a similar boat. I have M960 RD that has done 40km in a box and am looking for XT or XTR Dual control levers.

and sorry for some strange reason i don't want to sell the thing but rather spend more cash on levers..... I suppose it's the same upgrade virus you have...
