So, there I was, cycling along when i started hearing this strange noise coming from my back wheel.

Upon closer inspection it turns out the rim is cracked at the nipple (see photo)20090308_063536_wheel.JPG)

why would this happen? these wheels are 1yr3mnths old. yes, i know they came with the bike, and yes i know they are crap. but surely they should last longer than that?

what do you suggst i do? buy new (better) wheels or replace the rim.

they are Shi+mano WH RS10

I would take it back to the shop you bought the bike from and see if they will institute a claim against Shimano.

ok.

so there are more cracks forming at another nipple.

i'm definitely taking it back.

(I weigh in at 83kg's - surely not too heavy for these wheels?)

All this talk of "cracks" and "nipples"

I thought this was a family-friendly site.....Shocked

Nope. The 'family' thing with all this nonsense hugging, love ya all, lets do everythingtogether-thing has been tried but failed often.

playboy.com is more family friendly: bunnies for the kids, intersting article for the husband and style tips for the ladies.

That is a fatigue crack helped along by the fact that the rim was anodised. A new rim of the same dark colour used by the same person over the same distance will again crack in one year and 3 months.

It is a poor design, is what I used to say. However, I had a very acrimonious conversation with an importer of a similar rim that cracks prematurely and he defended his product saying it is not intended for continuous riding (or such, I'm paraphrasing here) but that it should only be used by old ladies going to church on Sundays.

Basicaly he admitted that these fancy lightweight wheels cannot be expected to last. They're intended for show days and race days.

Now I don't say it is a poor design anymore and/or a manufacturing fault, I say that you have used the rim for what it wasn't intended to do. Please be clear that you won't find the definition of what you are not intended to do with the rim in the brochure, on the website or from the importer's mounth. It's a vague, esoteric thing that's a little bit like carbon's amazing ability to be both stiff and compliant at the same time and cannot be captured in words.

My best suggestion is to replace the rim but make sure the next one isn't dark anodised, perhaps just silver, it makes a teeny weensy difference in longevity.

thank you JB.

i have taken it to the bike shop & the guy said he will show it to the rep.  i have only done 2600km on those wheels... sheez!

so the rim is anodised? is that why it is black? i guess it's like any other consumer product.  lasts as long as the warranty.

feedback: wheel replaced under warranty. no cost. cool.

problem: decals on wheel differs from decals on older wheel. mismatching wheels. uncool.

question: buy new front wheel? or stickers for front wheel? or live with it? confused.
