Right, Sorry It took 4 different posts. These tires are all reasonably cheap compared to Racing ralph/ mountain king protections.

 

I now have experiance with both crossmarks and Mountainkings which It seems are the two favourites.

I have to say Crossmarks are stil my Favourite. but I havnt tested the conti's in real mud.

 

So, heres some avalable to most of us, or at least on Chainreactions. 

 

The point of this not gutting one another but adding value to the forum by making insightfull or educated comments.

Lets see If there Is a alternative tire for SA conditions.

Winter is approaching and this means different things for North south.

 

I personally like the look of the wolverene a lot!

Those ignitors remind me of the Mountain Kings a bit.

 

I still cant make up my mind...

 

I might try the WTB's but Ya, I was thinking the same bout the Ignitors. And they will be as bulletprofe as crossmarks.

 

The contis wear so quickly if theres any tar in your ride..to expencive to get replacements twice a year.

I ordered a set of ADvantage tyres from Bluesky cycling about 3 years ago.They were not available in SA yet.They are very grippy, but do not roll fast enough for XC riding.Conti MT Kings are great but do wear fast.BTW I think that Maxxis Crossmarks are the worst ever. smiley14.gif

The Ignitors look like they'll work, I'd be keen to try them. Like you said, the Mountain Kings are awsome except they wear rather quick.

Crow, could not open the review on thr Ignitor, whats the outcome? Ignitor or advantage?

Personally i think the Advantage is more mud, Ignitor allround xc tyre

Ignitor is summer tyre. Useless in the wet or mud or on slippery roots and rocks. ADvantage will be more allround.

 

But the High Roller recieved better reviews than both.

Have a look at this:

puncture height is flattening height - the higher the number, the better.
They test it with a hetchet which falls down from test to test which higher and higher height. For example test 1 40cm, test 2 45cm, test 50 et cetera. The shown value is the first height the tire flattens. They test also for thorn proofness with a metal thorn. Thorn test isnt available for all tires. Class a is highest resistance, class f lowest.
the fields of use:
cc is cross country race
am is all mountain
en is enduro

RR measurement:
Rolling resistance: All tires are inflated to 2,5 bar. Then they are set up on the testing role without load. Then they are accelerated on 20 kilometers per hour. Now the resistance is set to zero to eliminate air resistance and bearing friction. Then the wheel gets loaded with 50kg. After a short time the tire runs again with 20km/h. The difference from unloaded and loaded run results gets the rolling resistance in watt.
movements in the carcass play a larger role than the tread.

But without of course being a semi slick.

 

I read a review on the Advantage where MBUK said great for hard pack/medium/even mud but not gripping on hard wet surfaces. Best In rocky conditions.

 

This is what we have in cape town. Im also interested in the Ignitor though.(obviously the 2.10) and the Wolverene which have a beautiful tread pattern.

 

Now what to use for the back??

Ya I think Crow smaaks a bit of Trail action! Crow we are more the "race snake" kind when It comes to tires bud, so looking at 2.2 or 2.1 Wink

 

Having said that, we must hook up for a ride! Tokai or something. Remember seeing you that time at the trailhead, you were so kind as to let us go In front of you.Clap what a nice guy..

 

Anyway.. tires... We should do our own tire shootout! each guy puts a different tire on and we swop wheelsLOL
