Shimano M555 front hub rebuild

The bearings on the GTs front hub are wrecked. I'm hoping that the hub is still half alive, but it feels seriously notchy. The hub is a Shimano M555, looks like this:

Can anyone tell me what bearings to use and where to get them? I'd like to get them today, but I won't have time to go past home and take the thing apart.

Great find Builder. Unfortunately the hub is quite old, so it's not listed there any more. I did find a PDF of it where they just say it uses 1/4" steel bearings. I'll see if I can find some today.

On all Shimano hubs except the Dura Ace and XTR, you'll find the rear uses 1/4 inch bearings and the front  3/16th bearings. Dont try and force one more bearing in there than whatever you find in there and don't buy balls from Bearingman. You want quality bearings, not ammunition for your catapult.

Thanks Johan! I was just about to shoot out to Bearingman to get 1/4" bearings. Now THAT would have been helpful! LOL

Any other places you can suggest I get some from?

I get bearings (in bulk) from www.loosescrews.com.

However, you want 18. Get them from a bike shop but make sure they come from a Shimano plastic bag. They are all Grade 20, as opposed to Bearingman's Grade 100 (bigger is bad) bearings.

However, if the wheel's races are pitted and in a bad way, it really doesn't matter.

Thanks Johan. I'll take it apart tomorrow, although by the feel of it I'll be surprised if the hub isn't a lost cause. Guess it's an excuse to get a Hope hub in front as well! Big%20smile
