I think there is something to understand because for any practical guy trying to do the math it wont make sense. But if you understand that it is not about the math of efficiency and all that but about the feeling, as you yourself described it, it makes sense.

Alas the tats put you into the "cool poncey" category.

That and your face all over the media.

I'm afraid I need to remove you from my friend list - you're just not "underground" enough for me anymore :P

:o

How do I change it

I must be romantic, nostalgic etc but the last time I laughed out loud riding a bike was on my SS. The silliness of riding one gear and pedalling like a rabid gazelle on the downhills plus the self inflicted pain of pedalling like Herr Jan on the uphills makes me grin like a love sick teenager. If it doesn't make you grin then so what? Don't ride SS.

I don't see your need to try and knock it by labelling us as misguided weirdos.

I guess it's because as grown ups we tend to steer clear of illogical things that to us the SS represents a sliver of being reconncted with our youth...

Thats not the be all and end all of SSing. Some like it because they're rebels, some because it improves their technical skills, some because they want to pretend to be cooler than those with gears, some because they had left overs they wanted to use, some because they need an excuse to buy another bike, some (like me) who want to experience SS world champs in Ireland later in the year.

SSing isn't any one thing - it's a collection of many things to many people - much like road biking, mountain biking, unicycling, track racing etc.

Do whatever tickles your fancy...

Thinking about doing the Babbas Lodge race this weekend on the SS. Those who have ridden the course, what do you think? Gear ratio, Stupid Idea?

I have never ridden out there.

Cheers

You should be fine. It's mostly flat, and the three "climbs" towards the end are nothing to worry about.

You're only hesitating because you're fearful.

Fear causes hesitation.

Fear of the unknown.

Look before you leap.

Thanks for the help LeTurbo

A "cool" club of hip society that are "risky" and "unconventional"

there is an image attached: The hair the cap the unmatching wheels the lo pro the three quarter pants the messenger bag, the tats, the scratched steel frame and stickers.

Some have elevated it to discs and really expensive hubs and saddles and exotic frames.

Its big money and big business for bikes shops to stock the right RETRO stuff.

Its cool.

Its competitive, with polo and standing

Its social with group rides.

It certainly isn't just about my old bmx.

I saw this on Bike Snob this morning:

I don't know why there always has to be this big debate...

Try riding a single speed bike, if you don't enjoy the ride, then don't ride it again, stick to your geared bike.

I tried a single speed, and I enjoyed it so I ride it. I have no problems with gears, they just not for me. But I don't go around making fun or insulting the geared boys, it's uncalled for.

On a side note... my first ss race will be Wartburg in February which I don't mind saying is scaring the cr@p out of me! I'm told it's hilly so I'm planning on going in with a 34:16 or maybe even 34:18 - either which way I'm guessing that I'll be riding by the single speeder's declaration: sitting, standing or pushing :)

Good luck for the race! What distance is it?

Choice of 20km or 40km, since it's my first ss race, I'll probably go for the 20. It's outside Pietermaritzberg so there quite hectic hills (so I'm told anyway). To try get some sort of training in I've been riding every single hill in sight! First race goal is just to finish in the top 3/4 of the field. :)
