What would a 30k bike be worth this afternoon? What would it be worth next week, next month, next year and next decade.?

When does a bike become junk? Can a 30k bike ever become junk?

What are the popular sizes in cycling: small to medium, medium to large? How much does odd sizes influence bikeprice?

How much has your bike lost in value over a 5 year stint of regular use.

How fast does a bike - kept 'standard', and well maintained - loose its value?

How long - generally speaking - does a bike last?

Any thoughts / witty comments?

The resale price of bikes depends largely on the economy. At the moment the economy is rather tough, so people do not really have the money to throw around, thereby forcing the seller to drop the price to be able to make a sale. The price of new bikes also dictates the price of 2ndhand bikes. When the price goes up (like now) then the price of 2ndhand bikes tends to go up too. At the moment we are in a catch 22 situation with the economy and new bike prices. So a price will depend largely on how scarce your bike is and if it is "hot property".

If a bike is looked after with a lot of love and care it will never become junk. If you look after it properly it could be a collector's item in a few years. A lot of the steel frames from the "old school" are collectors items now.

A popular size is most definitely the medium range. Taller people like me who ride farm gates or close to that size normally battle to sell our bikes because not a lot of people ride such big frames. Once again price is dictated by the market. Price will largely depend on what is most sought after at that time.

I don't know. I'm too scared to find outBig%20smile I'm also too scared to find out what the replacement value is because I don't think I can afford the revised premiumsDead

How fast does a bike - kept 'standard', and well maintained - loose its value?

I don't know. It probably depends on if it's an "off-the-shelf (Raleigh, Scott type makes) or something more upmarket/boutique.

How long - generally speaking - does a bike last?

It all depends on how well you look after your bike. If you service it regularly and don't have any crashes it should last a lifetime. Steel frames will tend to last a lot longer than carbon and don't fatigue with time.

Your relationship with your bike should be the same as your marriage. You should give as much attention to your bike as you do to your wife proportionately....If you ride your bike more than your wife then spend more time looking after your bike.....Big%20smileOuch  [/quote']

With the advent of the Gautrain, does anybody think there might be interest in those small, folding bicycles?

Don't they tend to keep their value a bit better?

Does it matter if it's a titianium rock?

I sure as hell hope that Ti frames keep their value for longer - but I'm biased in this regard...Wink.

But even then, it undoubtedly has its limits. My Ti frame is so ancient it has seriously old-skool measurements - and is very far off in tube angles to any of the newer bikes - which would probably make it much more difficult to sell.

Having said this, I popped into a well known 2nd hand store recently, and I'm pretty sure (??) that two Ti Merlin/Dean(?) frames on sale for R30k and R20k have been on sale for the last 2/3 years, and if memory serves - their prices haven't depreciated at all... That would never be the case with a Carbon/Alu frame - maybe, maybe with a good quality steel frame...

My 2 cents...
