Part 1

Simple question, to confirm what I'm reading / being told

"Shimano Dura-Ace

CS-7800 10 Speed Cassette features Titanium, alloy carrier mounted

large sprockets and is 9-speed freehub compatible. Use with Super

Narrow Chain for 10-speed."

Is this correct, that a DA cluster will fit a 9spd Hub?

Part 2

Given the above, is there any reason why a 5600 (105) 10spd cassette would not fit onto a Shimano WH-R550 hub?

The only thing I have found online is this...

 http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gloss_ho-z.html#hyperdrivec

Seems kinda strange and obscure, but then so

do most questions, until you find the answer..... Lamp

You learn

something new every day.

Over to the technically minded hubbers in the hope of answers and enlightenment Wink

strangely, and for what reason I can't figure, the 5600 is not gonna fit simple answer is the hub isn't 10spd compatible, but i'd rather dig a bit before settling for that.... Geek

thanks anyway Mud Dee Thumbs%20Up

Any ten speed shimano cassette will fit onto a shimano freehub for example i am currently using an 8 speed dura ace hub with a ten speed cassette all that is different is the amount of spacers you will need to use on the freehub

There also seems to be something strange with this 10sp/9sp mix - when using a DA 10sp cassette on a 9sp hub you hae to (I think from memory) use the 'spacer' that is included.

That would mean that a 9sp hub/freewheel is longer than a 10sp.

If I've got it right, it makes little sense to me.

all the above replies are correct.

you can definitely run a 10 speed cassette on any 9 or even 8 speed shimano hub body.

as regards the small shimano "10 speed spacer" that fits on the back of the cassette, that can only be discarded when using a 10 speed shimano freehub body.(if using a a mavic hub body, for example, u still need to use the small spacer)

however, you cannot retrofit the other way.ie a 9speed cassette on a 10 speed shimano hub as shimano have increased the diameter of the outer  "ribs" on the freehub body.

mud dee's response in in fact 100% correct

not too complicated hey!Thumbs%20Up

I'm not clear on this. Is this valid even for the new Dura Acer cassette with larger splines?

And whilst I have you on the line, are the 600-series hubs 9-speed compatible?

Ive got an old wheelset with 600 hubs. I got it with an 8 speed cassette. New 9 speed Ultegra cassette fits perfectly.

As for Shimano hubs, there are some later versions that will only work with ten speed cassettes, although they have released some of their 09 wheels like the C24 with 8/9/10 speed hubs.

Thanks to everyone who's post here today

I'm now leaning toward the hub being 8/9speed (as the earlier 550 wheelsets came). It seems like the only logical explanation, having done the rounds of 'is there an engineering reason, or am I just an idiot who can't work a chain whip' knowledgeable sources today.

Basically, if I fit the 5600 cluster with a wafer thin spacer, then the locking nut will not take a tread, and if the spacer is removed and the locking nut catches a thread than the cassette is so close to the spokes as to be all but running the inside edge of the chain on them..... either way something is very wrong

very frustrating when you can't make something so apparently simple work....! Still, as has been said here, sometimes the simplest explanation is the right one!
