Hi all. I want to raise the height of the handles bars a tad since after a two hour ride I want to cry thanks to back pain! Is it easy to just add a spacer to the steerer Is there a certain distance you can't go past? Any help would be appreciated since I want to do this tonight so I can ride tomorrow (hopefully without pain!).

Cou can't raise the handlebars via the stem if you do not have any more tubing on the steerer. What you can do it try a raiser bar or an adjustable stem.

Different forks have different limits.

Carbon forks frequently won't let you add more than a few cm of spacers.  Check your fork manual.

Some forks require at least 1cm of spacers *above* the stem.  Check your fork manual.

You can't raise the stem so that the steerer is only part-way in the stem.

You *can* flip almost all stems so they point upwards, instead of horizontal.

Ahhh... ok thanks. One more thing' date=' can the steerer part be extended somehow? Or is it a case of what there is is what there is?

you can either have the tube replaced or use a extended from BBB BHP-21 Extender or a very steep or adjusted stem as mentioned. BBB stems

You can get a stem with a more hectic angle ointing upwards, looks a bit dorky but can work. I hope you talking about your Mtb now. If you using Flat bars you can get a few mm's rotating it it bit since all Flat bars have a slight curve, I did that with myne, works great. If there is spacers left on top of the stem, take them off and place them under the stem for to gain height also.

If you have 2 bolts on the stemyou can raise the stem so that the steerer is just aove the centre of the top bolt. .  just check if the stem is clamping on all the sufaces on the inside.
