Hi

I'm deciding between a carbon road bike and a triathlon bike. Both in the same priceclass.

Q: How well would the road bike be in a half ironman? Obviously the tri bike would perform better, but I can't enter normal road races with the tri bike.

i've done a half ironman with a roadie bike. if i one day can pluck up enough courage for a full one (and sort out the little swimming problem) then i'll use the same roadiebike for that, too.

probably depends if you want to win - i just aimed to finish.

If you can run 2 bikes then get a TT bike.

I have been doing tri's for many years and  I have had a TT bike but i  prefere the road bike(with TT bars) as you can use it in draft legal races and IM distance.

A TT bike you can't use for road races or drafting tri's.

A TT bike will save you maybe 3-5 minutes at 30km/h+ on a 1/2 IM but you can only use it for that.

A forward seat post helps make you a little more comfy on the tri bars

Go for the road bike and fit time trial bars, either clip on type or dedicated tri bar.
