Before I start let me just say that I have not searched much on the topic, so I know I should Google it but am hoping that someone with some experience with this can give me a quick answer.

I have a magura brake, which I bought 2nd hand in good working condition. Put it on my 29'er and on it's first ride while riding up Boulders in Tokai I bailed and the Uni hit a rock and punctured the cable. The puncture is close to the brake connection itself on the main line running from the brake lever. I took it along to Cycle Lab and the guys there wanted to charge me a minumum of R400 to fix it, which is twice the amount I paid for it.

Is there an easy way to fix it (thinks of cutting the cable and pushing it onto the connection) ... and then to bleed the brake ?

Failing that does anyone have a cheap 2nd hand Magura lying around ? Smile

Is this on the HS33?

If yes, then really simple. Cut the hose with a knife, as straight as possible. Put a new olive on the hose, and bolt the cable back in. You may need to bleed it again.

On the HS33's you can actually pull the cable out and reconnect it without bleeding the brakes again - as long as the lever wasn't pulled.

See, there you go... I thought something was fishy, cause if I try hard enough, I can get braided stainless hoses for the motard for R400 odd...

And they want R400? That seems wrong... I'm certain you can find a new on for less than that' date=' and fitting it is simple.

I was a little annoyed when I spoke to the guys at Cycle Lab about getting it repaired. The tech guy I spoke to wasn't at all interested in even looking at it after I explained what was wrong, and basically told me not to bother cos he would charge me a minimum of R400 to fix it. Then when I started asking questions as to how I could then do it myself, he was very vague and even more disinterested so I gave up.

I think it is the HS33, no markings left on the side of the brake so would need to check see various images of the different brake to positively identify it. The lever has been pulled however as I did not notice the puncture until I was going down a steep hill, attempted to pull the lever with nothing happening. Then got off and pulled it a few more times only to notice a nice squirt of fluid shooting out of the hole Cry

Will see if I can get an Olive ? for the cable ... then will need to see about bleeding it....

If it's a hydraulic V, then it should be the HS33.

I think Cycles Africa is the distro for these. Just go to your LBS and ask them to order a few olives. Shouldn't cost much. Then get a bleed kit. A universal one should do the trick. They take normal mineral oil, although you can order Magura Blood - which is Magura's stuff. Apparently it's a little better than normal stuff, but I think that's just their marketing guys that say that.

lol ... yeah. Not sure why I keep torturing myself by going there. I suppose convenience of living around the corner, but am always disappointed when walking out....

JR' date=' here is a link to the Shimano hose story. It helped me shorten my hoses. You just need a new olive and insert if it is a similar connection.

Cool thanks. Will go along to Bridge Cycles and see what they can do for me. They have usually been excellent in having what I need.... unlike CL.
