Over the past two weeks I have picked that my XT rear derailleur shifter does not want to kick back into position after I shift it with my right hand thumb. (See circle)I need to pull it back to its original postion to shift again. I replaced the cable a week ago and it still persists. Can the inside be dirty or is a spring faulty??? I wash my MTB regularly and do not see that dirt can be the root cause.....any ideas or should I just take it in to my LBS for a decent service. I do not want to open it myself...20090429_003716_XT_Shifter.JPG smiley5.gif

Did you replace the cable and housing or just the cable?

If only the cable you need to replace the housing as well.

If you replaced both then something in your shifter is finished

If this still happens without a cable I would open and clean it. Not too difficult if done carefully. Gunk can get into all sorts of places and you'll probably get it good as new. Best way to clean it is with compressed air, but even a toothbrush with biodegradable detergent will do. Grease again afterwards.

Good Luck.

My epic partner' s left shifter did the same and eventually didnt want to release. he pulled out . without his front shifter he wouldnt have finished.

in the end it was a spring that was out of p[lace on the inside

I only replaced the cable and not the housing. So maybe it's it....

Bit scared to open it up myself...I can only image all those small parts and springs flying in all directions....

I get the idea that it is a spring....when I replaced the cable, the shifter was loose and worked easily, but with the cable in and all tightened up it started to give problems.

Thanks for all the advice.

Cheers,

Gerhard
