HI Guys.

Im busy selling my bike, but the buyer is from another city. What procedures regarding sending the bike and receiving payment do i need to follow for a safe and reliable transaction.

its new to me and wanna know who carries the most risk as i do not want to send the bike without receiving payment and the buyer wont send the money without having the bike!!

is there another way? or do we trust everyone on this site!!!Wink

A. Trust no one!

B. If the money is EFT'd to you in advance and reflects in your account, it is very difficult (almost impossible) for him to try cancel the EFT/reclaim his cash. Hence paying in advance would mean the buyer is carrying the risk.

C. You ship it, he says he will pay once it has arrived, you obviously carry the risk.

That is why buying items on the hub = possible bargains, but with that you increase risk.

Don't you have a friend/family member, that is in the same or close to the area where the buyer is that you can ship to. Arrange them to meet up and conclude the transaction in cash?

ok, much appreciated!!. Buyer says there's no-one that can conclude the transaction on behalf of him and vice versa for me. so best for him to carry risk as he wants the bike.

hey thats an idea that could work.

Hey what will shipping cost- ive spoken to SAA Cargo and said they cannot give a quote as i have to box it in a bicycle box (stripped- frame and wheels on each side of frame) and then it gets priced on the volumetric size and not weight!!

well the best is to get all the persons information beforehand including id number, home and work address and tel numbers, etc, then check out the phone book or get someone to do it, or phone their work to confirm they work there if you are jumpy. Save all info eg emails etc just in case.

Having said that so far, i've received everything i've bought from other hubbers and always paid upfront...but you never know. And go with your gut..if it tells you something is wrong then listen.

I'm having a bike shipped  of dimensions 120cmx20cmx70 weighing 14kgs so u can get an estimate on that size and weight at SAA cargo. Also it cost me R250 for shipping.

Hope this helps

There are other ways to do it where there is no risk to either party, but there are costs.

Depending on the amount involved, if its substantial, the first method is good, if not so much, the second method is fine.

The first is to go to an attorney and arrange to have the buyer pay the money into the attorneys trust account, there can be a basic buy and sell agreement whereby the attorney releases the money to you on the strength of you producing the couriers waybill, or the buyer advising the attorney he has recieved the product.

Of course there will be an attorney cost.

The second is you send the goods via courier but with the instruction that they are to HOLD the goods at the delivery depot and not to release for delivery until you give the authority to do so (ie) the funds are cleared.

Because this is a lot of paper work and a bit of a hassle, some couriers wont do it, but a few do and charge a few hundred extra for the service.
