Shifters not working as should

Hi,

I was wondering what could be wrong with shifters as occasionally when going hard uphill they sort of have no tension when trying to shift down and the cables were replaced not so long ago.

 

It's the shimano tiagra 9 speed, don't know if it's a problem with the shifters or with the RD. Before I take the bike in for a complete service, would like to know if there was anything I could perhaps do to sort it out.

I'm not very technical, but logic would tell me that if you are pedaling hard, there's probably too much pressure on the cassette (from the chain) and the spring in the RD hasn't got enough strength to derail the chain on to the next cog or to actually move the RD accross so that it can shift down.

Try to back of the pedal force for a brief second until it shifts down.

Its got nothing to do with tension from pedalling. Its most probably an internal problem in the shifter. Take it to a shop to get it sorted.

Have you adjusted the cable tension since changing your cables? New cables stretch quite a bit initially so I would try increasing the cable tension before going to a bike shop or replacing parts.

 

 

 

Obviously if you've done this then it is probably the shifter that is causing the problem. How old is the shifter?

Did you change just the cable and not the housing? if that is the case you need to change the housing as well.

Yea, I only changed the cables, and I tried adjusting the tension already.

 

I think I'll take it in and ask them to change the housing then, thanks

Zang, please check your inner cable and make sure both inner cable and outer casing are Shimano. We tend to find sometimes dirt get inside the outecasing and starts causing shifting problems.
