The biggest thing that p!sses me off is that young commission driven salesperson who tries to sell something that a customer does not really need. I love to "deflate" people like that.

Linden Cycles is great in the way. they do not work on commision at all.

Now you are really being naive. Nobody will keep a sales assistant who does not sell. If he is in danger of losing his job he WILL sell anything .

Klapperknop...You make a valid point about buying online. But' date=' from my side I would say most of my purchases have been totally on impulse. I like walking around a shop, looking at all the goodies and fighting temptation to buy anything and everything that appeals to me.

Having said that, the prices and professional service you get from somewhere like CWC or CRC are a big bonus.

I have a "local bike shop" in Northcliff Cycles. Alex and his crew are fantastic, always able to help you out and always willing to go the extra mile for you. But, I do travel a helluva long way to get that service...but it is well worth it.

I went into The CycleHub at Rietvlei for the very first time this weekend (which as the crow flies is less than 3km from me) and I was suitably impressed with the shop and some of the prices. The shop is a huge improvement from its old spot at Panorama...and in such a cool setting.

I also believe that we are quick to complain about service...but rarely give praise when its due. I agree with Mampara, I also expect the best service no matter where I go...but when its "above and beyond" it also deserves a mention.

oh my google .... you also want a moderator spot ??

how do you know they work on commission? i work at a bike shop on saturday mornings - it's my mate's business - and i am a salesperson. i am not on commission. whether i do 10 grand or 60 on a morning, i get the same remuneration. ok, so i'm not the stereotypical young salesperson you are referring to, but you wouldn't be happy if i said that road engineers were all lazy bastards who waste taxpayers' money by farting around on the hub all day, would you?

If you get bad service just dont buy from them again. That is what I do.

Yah, actually, thats what most people do.

As an example, the most successfull retailer in the world "Walmart" judges their performance, not by complaints or compliments, but by the numbers of complaints.

Their theory is if they get a reduction in complaints from a known average, the reason is customers are simply not returning to the shop.

They believe customers complain because they want improvement, however if complaints dwindle, its not because they are wonderfull, just that the customer is so irritated they dont complain and dont return.

A new take on complaints hey.!

but, with relevance to the discussion, surely we have to take into account ecomonies of scale and type of business.

Oi..... you are a mite touchy here now are you not...... do not tell me you sold a Polar S725X to a old lady who just wanted a pink bicycle with a basket on...... sies man!!!!!!!! BTW I am not wasting taxpayers munny....... it is revenue made from oil sales.

And if you make no sales and stand nikked in the field all day long will they still keep you in the shop?????? I doubt it.

not at all (in fact, that pic you refer to was taken by the shop owner's son-in-law, but i digress...) btw, she wanted the polar. i threw the basket in as a bonus...and at the price of polars, we made a deal on the bike...

and, yes, they do keep me on. a sale of a bike; an important, costly component; advice on upgrades; etc, etc...does not necessarily happen in a morning...i often don't see the sales because the customer wants to look around...his/her perogative...what's nice is when you hear they have come back because you spent the time with them to explain things, because you gave them good advice. if i'm going to squander anyone's money, it'll be my own...not a customer's, not a taxpayer's, not an oil baron's...

I guess to a degree.

A lot of SA business owners take the attitude of, "if we dont hear a complaint or only 10 this year as opposed to 20 last year, we must be doing things right". - well not necessarily.

Sometimes, a complaint means the customer actually wants to come back, just to a better operation.

Most SA business operate on a"reactive" basis, in other words when theres a complaint we will sort it out, if theres no complaint we just tool on forward.

Walmart and USA based business in general tend to operate on a "proactive" basis, engaging the consumer where possible BEFORE he complains. As strange as it sounds its not difficult, a shop owner knows if he did a slap dash lube job, or sold a swatch to a customer who actually wanted a Rolex - engage the customer telephonically, e-mail etc BEFORE he comes back and shouts.

Look at the car service industry, a day or two after your car is serviced the service dept. calls you and asks if all is okay, this is PROACTIVE complaint handeling, if theres an issue they can sort it out immediately and dont wait for the car to break down in Poffadder, and have to deal with an irate sweaty customer yelling at you over the phone, have the cost of sending out pick ups at your expense etc.

You pervert!!!!! I am sure you made a date to teach her how to use the HRM after hours!!!!!!

I can see from your reply that you are a salesperson par excellance!!!!!!! Next time I need something I will surely contact you....... but remember I will be watching you...... and dont drink pink drinks or enter swimming competitions!!!!!!!!!

But I will continue to "deflate" salespersons who try to sell something to somebody that that person does not need.
