Two "wrongs" dont make a "right".

Were you all single file?

Were you riding with due consideration for other road users.?

Just because theres a following car' date=' dosnt give the bunch the right to spread out over the road.

Anyway,........ so he shouted, so what, someone in the bunch with a juvinile "herd" mentality escalated the situation to a possible confrontation by squirting water - why, for what,........ to appear the tough, dont take c**p from no-one animal in the herd.??

Really, loose the attitude, I am pretty sure there was a lot he had to complain about knowing how most bunch cyclists ride, keep your hands on the bars and smile and wave, thats all, smile and wave.!

I am not pointing a finger at Grapkas, just the way the incident was escalated unnecessarily.

I would go as far as to say that Grapkas is not telling the whole story and is looking for sensation...... NOBODY gets that angry without being seriously provoked.

I'd probably get hugely peeved if there was a car trundling along at 30-40kph with 20+ cyclists in front of it! Riding safe is one thing but creating a 40m long rolling road block that is impossible to ovetake is just plain selfish!

Even groups of riders greater than 20 without a following vehicle pose a threat to themselves and traffic - if a robot turns orange as the group approach it there is no way for the entire peleton to get through - the options are half the group brake hard probably resulting in a crash or the entire group goes through with half breaking the law...a lose lose situation.

I never ride in packs greater than 6 - use it - don't use.

I see way too many people getting knocked down by cars resulting in either death or serious injuries. MTB is the way to go.

I agree that Jhb has alot of "important" people who feel the roads belong to them and only them and everybody else are dumb idiots that can't drive but I also see groups as small as 3 people occasionally riding next to each other. As a cyclist myself I get pissed off with that. You don't prevoke reaction when in a single file. Keeping a car up because you are spread out next to each other however pisses anybody off...

I have to say that we don't have problems with cars often as most of the people in the area knows our club well and recognise the following vehicle.

That is what made this incident so amazing. We were only 7 riders all riding in single file and this man completely lost it.  We're passed by many cars and they never complain and this guy was bursting a vein in his head.

The squirt of water was uncalled for but that was seriously all that happened that was out of line from our side, no zap signs nothing/!!

My big question is: THE OLD MAN GOT SO ANGRY AND STARTED RIDING LIKE A POEPOL, WHAT IS MORE DANGEROUS? US RIDING ALONG IN SINGLE FILE MINDING OUR OWN BUSINESS OR HIM RIDING IN THE RIGHT HAND LANE SWERVING INTO ONCOMMING TRAFFIC TRYING TO PUSH US OFF THE ROAD.

I say again, it's the first time in months something like this happens to us so all in all i'm not that peeved, just amused.

I just have one more thing to add.  Everybody allways says don't lose your temper, bla bla bla but it's so difficult when you're tired and on the edge of bonking and somebody comes along and insults you when you're doing nothing wrong.  I think it's a miracle these things don't escalate into much worse situations more often!

Follow vehicles that hold up a huge queues of traffic should be banned - they make the situation worse!

Follow vehicles should drive up ahead of the group, pull off the road when it is safe to do so and then wait for the group to pass before repeating over.

Its better, as had been said before here, to ride in smallish groups of 4 - 7, single file with no follow vehicle..

ZippIt,  On the roads we train a following vehicle is absolutely essential.  The stretch of road where we have the problem is only 3km long before we turn off onto the open roads.  The roads are very quiet but we need the vehicle because trucks come along at over 100km/h and one of our club members was killed in this way a few years ago.  No following vehicle, no ride!!!

Zipp It, i do however understand that in jhb it won't work because of traffic, i will also get angry if i have to sit behind a following vehicle that's going 30km/h for 10km but in our case it's not like this at all.

This is why I gave up road cycling about 10 years ago.

Maybe I am selfish but I don't like sharing with cars, busses or taxis.

Off road I don't have to share with any of them.

Only with other Mountain Bikers who greet me with a smile and a friendly wave.    Smile  Thumbs%20Up

Grapkas. You do get poepholle like that old guy. "The road belongs to him and only him". I have a bit of a temper and would most likely have put my shoe through his door, following up by shoving his head up his arse. NOTHING JUSTIFIES PUTTING RIDERS LIVES IN DANGER. This guy is no better than the taxi driver that killed the girl in Pta on her way to school. He was just lucky that nobody got injured but it could just as easy have been worse. As for the following vehicle, ESSENTIAL. Cars can wait 10 sec. Its no biggy and it keeps riders safe! Clap
