Gosh but you guys can moan alot. This was my first Monster - granted I only tackled the 45km this time around but that was because I took a few things into account.

1) I looked at the race profile for the 75km race with the total ascent and the terrain and I knew I was not fit enough for that.

2) A small give away was the race's name - Magalies Monster. That scared me half to death as well.

I loved the race and i will definately be back next year to do the 75km having adequately prepared myself for the event.

I completed the 45km race in 3h22. I was 120th overall, 5th female and 3rd subvet. So was quite pleased with the result.

As for the supposed lack of medical personnel at the event. I am a Paramedic (studies for 4 years) and I have to say that whether the medics that usually do the standbys are present or not really makes no difference in my life. The medics placed at the events usually have up to 4 weeks of medical training and anything bigger than a small scratch is way beyond their capabilities. Just recently I saw one of the standby medics dabbing a rider's fractured nose with massive abrasions with a swab of cotton wool and the good old faithful savlon. Until proper paramedics are placed at events, I personally would not stress that no medics are present.

Anyway....that is my 2 cents worth for the day.

More; Harder; Faster!!!

Scott24 I use the medical personal at these races ALOT and am fairly happy with the service I received . And trust me when I say they do not treat me for small things like a broken nose when I come for a visit !

No slip' date=' Freudian or otherwise. Everybody knows MTBers suffer from some complex which requires them to prove their alleged superiority to roadies. smiley2.gif

Do you ever hear roadies boasting about "how that side wind really got rid of the dirty mountainbikers"? smiley36.gif

I think that has more to do with it not happening. Take a look at the front of nearly every road race and you will find mountain bike riders in the mix. Not trying to be funny here either, have a look.

I think what I'm trying to say here is that it is a lot easier for an MTB to transition and do well on road than the other way round. This doesn't stop roadies from pitching up at places like Babbas Lodge and doing really, really well. They may even call themselves mountain bikers afterwards. However races like the Magalies Monster will only be loved by true Montain Bikers. Oh, and those psychos who adventure race. Big%20smile

Whats all this crap roadies / mtbers, we all ride bikes to get fit or for fun or to race dont we?.I am a roadie well more triathlon but anyway just bought a mtb rode it 3 times the last ride 2 laps N/farms entered the 75km monster and finished in good shape no falls, got frustrated on the climbs riders stopping and or falling in front of me which left me having to walk untill i could get going again. From a skills level the downhills need a lot of work had to walk a few of the more scary ones and was amazed at how the mtbers flew past me on the rideable downhills anyway something to work on.I really enjoyed the race and will do more.

It's a bit like Bulls vs Sharks * supporters. They both love rugby.

BTW - Well done, I on the other hand did really, really badly. But I will return next year and conquer that beast. Big%20smile

* I would have mentioned the Lions, Cheetahs and Stormers, however I have it on good authority that they no longer have supporters and they might not actually play rugby. Big%20smile

Leaving now, I'll get another hat and coat at my destination.
