I am looking at getting an indoor trainer for the wet winter in the Western Cape. My only concern is does the trainer being very static not have a negative impact on your bikes frame. <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Will it on the long run not weaken your frame? When you ride your frame has free movement and obviously not with the trainer.

I would like to hear your comments.

Have been riding trainer for the past 3 winters. Frame seems to be fine. I havent felt anything funny when back on the road or trying to hold on to the East Rand bunch on a Saturday morning.

Depends on how much you are willing to pay. I have a standard Giant trainer. The important thing is that you train with a cadence or power meter. Without either of these 2 your indoor training wont be sufficient.Cadence rock!!!!!!!!! smiley17.gif

I agree to some extent but it is not the bee-all-an-end-all. I have been riding only by monitoring my speed and to keep my HR at a certain level and this has helped me signifficantly. Possibly not as much as having a powertap/cadence monitor avail, but still.

The one thing I can say about IDT, make sure you have some entertainment available. Riding for 2-3 hours with no "visual stimulation" (ie: TV\DVD) or even just some music to help you along, this makes training on the IDT very boring in the long run and you tend to loose interest. If you sweat like me, then reading is not an option either.

Using an IDT with a MTb using knobblies is not advised but can be done. The noise will drive you insane within a couple of minutes let alone the vibration that travels along the frame. (this can be rather stimulating for some people).Ouch Anther reason why it is not advised, is that, if you have a roler on which the rear wheel drives, which is held in place with plastic/perspex covers, they tend to crack around the bearings. One day you decide "I wanna go ride" then when you get onto the IDT, everything falls appart. I had to replace both sides of my IDT last week because of this.

Best to go to your LBS and ask which they stock and what the backup for those brands are like.

Oh, and get one where you can change resistance remotely. (that cable-thing-a-megic that goes to the roler)Smile

Good luck!!

On an IDT, riding with speed is almost the same as riding with a power meter. Depending on the type of trainer, riding at a constant speed is the same as riding at constant power.

Using straight speed, you get an excellent indicator of relative effort - 32km/h today is about the same effort as 32km/h next week and is less effort than 33km/h the week after.

A number of IDT manufacturers provide general speed vs. power graphs that you can use to get an reasonable indication of absolute effort. You could also borrow a power meter for a few hours and create a curve specifically for your trainer to get an even better estimate.

Annyone want to sell me your  Indoortrainer, Ive been looking for one for a while but cannot justify spending R2500, then I rather ride outside and replace the drivetrain after the winter.

Stop being a naf, ride in the wet!

Only pulling your socks... Glad to see you are becoming an active member on the Hub. Just remeber as I have said before, get a decent trainer if you're going to do this. Giant/RavX are not worth the effort, my Giant is purely used for bike setup because that little roller provides no real resistance.

Rather replace the drivetrain in September. IDT's are as boring as a room full of politicians. Go ride your bike and stop complaining about getting wet smiley36.gif

So do you have one? How would you know how boring they are? Nah droo I one one so I can do those 4hr mind mumbing road rides In front of the tv. no Im serious. One has to do those long moderately paced rides in between the short Intense rides. You should Know this. Ask some of your mates If they have one? Even just to borrow so I can see, perhaps It really does suck.

Dude I did a 3hr ride In tokai yesterday, man, was it wet and muddy, especially the road to silvermine. My bike is destroyed. Im going to have to spend days cleaning.

I do agree i did tokai as well and spend the majority of last week cleaning.

I don't know if it is worth it?

Decided on going out on the road on Saturday seeing as it was such a pleasant morning and i wasnt counting on that much standing water in Blouberg and Surrounds.

Dont think the 2hrs spent cleaning the bike after 2hrs of riding is worth it so i'm leaning towards getting a trainer as well.

I don't own one, I tried once and I just can't do it... I'd rather put some time in cleaning. Rollers are a bit more fun, at least you can fall off if you're not paying attention.

For those LSD rides there's plenty of fire roads on the mountain just around the corner...
