What gearing do you use on Road bike ?

After using a compact crank set for a while now, I am looking at changing to normal/ bigger chain rings.

Uses 50/36 front, back 12-25, but this only gave me a advantage in climbs. With all the flattish / rolling hill races in WC I need something that gives more speed.

What is considered a good option 52/39 or 52/39 ? any thing else ?

53/39 I reckon is what 80% or more cyclists use these days (At least those without MTB type triples on their roadbikes ....), I guess that coupled with a 12-25 at the back?

I use 52/39 with 12-25 or 12-27 for the really Hilly climbs, and 52/39 with 11-23 for the undulating rides

Just get a 11-23 cassette, as a 50-11 gear ratio is actualy a bit bigger than a 53 - 12. You will still have the advantage on climbs and you won't run out of speed on the flats.

53/39 not very big ? Most new top end bikes come with these standard these days, so was just wondering.

Most races are undulating, and once in a while there is a climb (longer than 3km). I really like training on hills though, so what would be the best setup at the back ?

Do you change cassettes for races with hills etc or do you have another set of wheels for these ?

I fully agree with this gearing - never been dropped even on a downhill with a 50-11
