Crank Length Foncusion

Slave

Recommended Posts

Yep, as always, I'm confused again (Still)

Some time back a fella rider said I should run 180 cranks for my height. Currently running 175's.

What is a good rule of thumb for working out what crank length is best?

half your femur length.  If you are a spinner shorter, if you grind big gears longer.  Always be aware the longer it is the more stress on your knees (weak knees = shorter length).

BB. not at the time, but now I have access to a spare crank set with shorter cranks (170mm) with 53 / 39 blades.

What I'm scheming is to change my 52 blade to the 53 and rather keep the 42 than change to a 39 and possibly going to shorter cranks.

Logic says that it will take more leg power to drive a shorter crank, but I should be able to go faster. (Based on the practice of pushing a merry go round as a kid, we got it to go faster by pushing in the middle.)

Just an idea I'm playing around with.

OK I guess the other 'ekspets' will probably provide me the necessary kick to the gonads but here would be my take .....

Keep the 175's and put the 53 and 39 on your bike. You will only gain and not lose anything. I'm sure that others will comment on the exact gear ratio issues but that is what I would so - use it don't use it up to you Wink

I would say that 170 is too short for you!

get the 'best' length for your leg length/ riding style....

then get the right gearing combinations for your riding style/ race conditions.

BUT this will not increase your power which is physically impossible!!!

... therefore neither your speed,

the merry go round had very little resistance - that is why you could push it faster!

Check out Lenard Zinn's website www.zinncycles.com he knows a bit about taller people and cranks.

If you are a fun rider, stick with what you have, If you are serious it makes sense to get the correct length crank for your leg length.

Thanks BB.

Since my trip into the SBR the other day, I am not keen on changing my 42 to a 39. (One kick in Gonads.) If anything, I find the change down from 52 to 42 to be too big as it is.

Even running 11 / 22 at the back, 42 is a bit fast for me. (It was a bit of a gring going through SBR on that ratio, but I managed.) 39 will be even faster.

My big problem is leg speed. Dem tings is super slow.
