Good Luck with the search. You will get allot of different ideas but here is my 2cents.

Like you I only recently started with M.T.B.?ing. I was in the market for the same budget as you but couldn?t find anything I liked here on the hub, junkmail or gumtree after about a month of waiting and searching. I then bought a new bike. I bought a silverback as I found it the best  value for money I could find. You get beter components on the bike and when I asked the hubbers for their opinion most of them recommended that I pick the Silverback above a Merida or Felt.

I would recommend going for the Phoenix (or Nabraska if you want to spend a little bit more). Remember to keep in mind what ?cbrunsdon? said about the extras that you will have to get. All the little things add up and it does become a bit expensive.

What the heck happened to your front wheel rad?

Bad PhotoShop of what my bike will look like with other components..

I would say 1 a frame (my anthem is up with the best +Fox RP2 rear shock)

Components come 2nd as they are wear and tear items

If we look at what im giving you for R12500

XT RD (2nd from best)

Deore FD,shifters (Middle Range)

Hydro Disc Breaks (a Must)

Wheels are good wheels that should last forever

Front Shock is Air + Remote Lockout (Nice and soft and better than Coil)

If u live in Stellenbosch u probably will spend a lot of time at Jonkershoek and Eden.  Maybe even Grabouw which is awesome.

U should always learn to ride on a hardtail b4 u swop to a softtail. And go for a good frame rather than components cos your components will wear anyway and u'll have to change them eventually. With a good frame u can upgrade parts as they wear and when u have the money. Much cheaper than having to upgrade your frame later.

I have had my Silverback Reno now for 18 months and have done many MTB races with it during that time. Only thing I have had to replace is a chain and rear cassettev otherwise have been very happy with it and I think they are very underated. Should consider Reno or higher models.

If you pay that much just for a morewood frame you are looking in the wrong place, wouldn't say what I paid for my complete morewood but lets just say everyone thinks it was a steal at that price.

Listen guys,

Can someon eactually name me a "bad" frame??

And also justify why it is bad??

I saygo wit a reputable brand (i.e not chinese...) and your frame will last you more than enoug - that is satrting out...when youm are racing competitive..that's another story..

so, buy anything that you can afford..I gurrantee you  - within a year of enjoying your MTB'ing... you know what you want to get next...

so do not buy your dream bike first off...get to know the game first THEN buy (upgrade) to what you want...
