I prefer running my brakes quite far into the handlebars since I only use 1 finger to brake. This means that the shifter also moves away from the grip, making it uncomfortable to change gears. I can't run the shifters on the other side of the brake, since the little 'gear indicator' is in the way.

My questions:

Can I remove the gear indicator from the Shimano shifters? How?

Are there more compact shifters available (SRAM, Microshift, anything) that work with Shimano derailleurs?

I also like to run my brakes far away...

I run Sram, and I have no problems, they either have no gear indecators, or they run as the 'clip' around the bar.

But this would mean running a Sram RD, the shimano FD will work

also neans getting used to using your thumb to change up and down....

And then there's always gripshift from sram

I recently changed from X-9 triggers to X-0 gripshift, works great, and it'll take care of the brake positioning...

But yeah, will need to replace your RD, not sure if Shimano makes a gripshift?

I can't do Gripshift. I incorporate Trials stuff into my 'normal' riding, which will mean phantom gearshifts when I don't need them.

I would prefer to stick with Shimano, but it looks like all the shifters have that stupid gear indicator on the inside of the shifter, which is where I'd like to have my brake lever.

On the 08/09 XT you can remove the display very easily. Just unscrew the top plate. They've even added a little cap on the inside to cover the part just removed.

It goes form this (on the left) to that (on the right)

The actuall shifter part also attaches to the clamp and can me moved. So if you want to move the shifter between the grip and brake lever, you can play with the reach.

I removed my displays so that the shifters sit under my brake levers. There is also scope for the shifter position to be adjusted on the clamp.

which Shimano gear shifters do you have? Depending on your answer it may or may not be possible to remove the gear shift indicator.

'07 Deore. I'm sure I can remove the indicator, just not sure if the shifter will work afterwards! LOL

07 Deore,......

darn those can't be removed without busting the shifter. Time for an upgrade to SLX me thinks.

SLX is a much better shifter anyway

or o as mampara says, take a hack saw to it.

Maybe I'll give it a go this weekend. Got some goodies coming in so a fork service is on the cards as well. And maybe different brakes.
